Godly Learning
Author: John Morgan
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521357005
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 382
Book Description
Godly Learning attempts to establish the relationship which Puritans worked out between faith and reason in the eighty years before the Civil War. This was a period of rapid expansion of educational facilities, of a clash between humanist values of the Renaissance and the fideism of the Reformation, and of confrontations between traditionalist (primarily Aristotelian) approaches to knowledge and the more experimental path signalled by Bacon. Taking an existential approach to the question of meaning, Puritans sought their solution in the development of a covenant theology based on a life of active faith. They argued vehemently that natural reason was incapable of finding the path to salvation and only faith could regenerate reason to its proper capabilities. At the same time, Puritans emphasised the value of learning for comprehension of Scripture and preparation of sermons. Starting with a fresh approach to the question of defining Puritans, Godly Learning proceeds to delineate the infrequently studied puritan mentalité which informed the better-known public political and ecclesiological positions. Not since the work of Perry Miller has there been such a thorough attempt to comprehend the Puritan view of reason, and the implications of that view.

Pages : 933
Book Description
This book contains practical advices given by the author to the spiritual seekers over a decade. Usually there is a lot of confusion in the spiritual field, with gurus springing up like mushrooms everywhere, professing their own ideologies as standard systems of sadhana. In this state of affairs, the age-old traditions of Vedanta, Yoga and Tantra are freely being borrowed from and used for selfish gains but seldom acknowledged, much less clearly explained. Going through the available literature on these subjects, the reader is usually perplexed and often misled. Hence arises the need to explain the spiritual path and its sadhanas authentically and clearly. In this book, you will see the practical spiritual wisdom of India explained in simple terms, covering the intricate topics of Vedanta, Yoga, Tantra, Indian Astrology and Mysticism in the light of the teachings of great saints, both ancient and modern.

Book Description
Say the name Job and our first thought is suffering. But is there more? The trials, hurt, and betrayals (bad counsel) seem to consume us, remaining utmost in our minds and memories. Thankfully, there is so much more drawing us to hope, faith, and God’s overwhelming care in all situations. Job did suffer, but his response to his God brought restoration and genuine healing.

Job
Author: John F. MacArthur
Publisher: HarperChristian Resources
ISBN: 0310123771
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 128
Book Description
The events that occur in the book of Job present readers with a profound question: "Why do the righteous suffer?" Although a direct answer to this question seems important, the book of Job does not set forth such a response. Job never learned the reasons for his suffering. In fact, when God finally confronted Job, he could only put his hand over his mouth and say nothing. His silence underscores the importance of trusting God's purposes in the midst of suffering, because suffering—like all other human experiences—is directed by perfect divine wisdom. In this study, pastor John MacArthur will guide you through an in-depth look at the defining themes and interpretative challenges in Job. Studies include close-up examinations of doctrinal themes such as God's Justice and "A Discourse on Human Frailty." —ABOUT THE SERIES— The MacArthur Bible Study series is designed to help you study the Word of God with guidance from widely respected pastor and author John MacArthur. Each guide provides intriguing examinations of the whole of Scripture by examining its parts and incorporates: Extensive, but straight-forward commentary on the text. Detailed observations on overriding themes, timelines, history, and context. Word and phrase studies to help you unlock the broader meaning and apply it to your life. Probing, interactive questions with plenty of space to write down your response and thoughts.

1, 2, 3 John
Author: J. E. McDermond
Publisher: MennoMedia, Inc.
ISBN: 0836198042
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 299
Book Description
Written during a time of church schism that has left Christians confused and questioning their status before God, the author of 1,2, 3 John argues that the Christian life has two fundamental markers: Acceptance of Jesus Christ’s role in God’s plan of salvation, and the need to practice love in interactions with other believers. In his commentary, the 24th volume in the Believers Church Bible Commentary series, J. E. McDermond shows that that these two crucial concepts are as relevant and important today as they were back then. This Believers Church Bible Commentary series is a readable series of commentaries for all who seek more fully to understand the original message of Scripture and its meaning for today—Sunday school teachers, members of Bible study groups, students, pastors, and other seekers. The Believers Church Commentary Series is a cooperative project of Brethren in Christ Church, Brethren Church, Church of the Brethren, Mennonite Brethren Church, Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite Church Canada.
