This book brings together results of studies on progresses and challenges in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Lesotho, Kenya, Botswana, Madagascar, Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda and Nigeria. The authors focus on selected goals as cases; and the book presents resulting lessons that can inform the post-2015 development agenda. The studies are against the background that in September 2000, world leaders from 189 countries, including 147 Heads of State, gathered at the United Nations General Assembly to consider the challenges of the new millennium. They adopted the Millennium Declaration, which set out a vision for inclusive and sustainable globalization: UN 2000 (A/RES/55/2). The leaders pledged to work towards ensuring that conditions of extreme poverty are eradicated wherever they existed. To realise this declaration, the UN established eight MDGs to be achieved by 2015. The goals were broken down into 18 concrete targets and 48 indicators to track progresses in implementation. For the years lost 2000, countries in sub-Saharan Africa have been striving to achieve the goals. So far, some have achieved some of the goals, and the results toward the rest of the goals are also by and large positive, though off-target.

In the face of megatrends such as globalisation, climate and demographic change, digitalisation and urbanisation, many cities and regions are grappling with critical challenges to preserve social inclusion, foster economic growth and transition to the low carbon economy. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set the global agenda for the coming decade to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. A Territorial Approach to the Sustainable Development Goals argues that cities and regions play a critical role in this paradigm shift and need to embrace the full potential of the SDGs as a policy tool to improve people's lives. The report estimates that at least 105 of the 169 SDG targets will not be reached without proper engagement of sub-national governments. It analyses how cities and regions are increasingly using the SDGs to design and implement their strategies, policies and plans; promote synergies across sectoral domains; and engage stakeholders in policy making. The report proposes an OECD localised indicator framework that measures the distance towards the SDGs for more than 600 regions and 600 cities in OECD and partner countries. The report concludes with a Checklist for Public Action to help policy makers implement a territorial approach to the SDGs.

The book presents the experiences, complexities, and contradictions of the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in Brazil so far. Through chapters from a variety of stakeholdersincluding political and social actors that go far beyond the federal government, the book examines national, regional, and local aspects of development in Brazil. The book draws from scientific knowledgeand pratical experiences taking a critical look at what the SDGs mean in a Global South country and what the implications of this are for global development. The first section of the book addresses the critical political and institutional aspects related to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Brazil, highlighting advances as well as pitfalls and setbacks. The chapters look at broad questions related to the role of civil society in defining political priorities and strategies to move forward with the SDGs in Brazil, as well as the dilemmas for incorporating the SDGs at the different levels of government and other Brazilian institutions. It critically addresses the political and institutional advances and barriers to the progress of the SDGs in Brazil, as well as political and social innovations that emanate from different sectors of Brazilian society. The second section directly addresses progress made toward the current SDGs in the context of the political, economic and social variables specific to Brazil. The chapters address critical shortcomings and demands for Brazilian society - the need for improvements in the education and employment policies to reduce poverty, the urgent need to increase gender equality and reduce violence, as well as the strengthening institutions and policies to mitigate climate change and protect the environment. The book provides comparative information about the materialization of the 2030 Agenda in urban policy in ten countries located in Europe and Latin America. The Declaration of Quito is the starting point for the implementation of SDGs into public policies in urban areas. However, there are fewer efforts to understand the impact that the 2030 Agenda and, specifically, the instruments developed for its application in cities. The information of each country is presented in relation to two aspects: the construction of a public policy style in each country and the results and impacts on urban public policies implemented in specific cities within the national frameworks. The first means the emergence of a public policy framework and its materialization in public policy instruments. In this regard, the book raises the following questions: To what extent have the SDGs come to generate a common framework for cities in the countries? And how Urban SDGs are translated to national urban policies? The second, results and impacts at the local level, is related to two aspects: a) substantive: the goals of the policy and b) procedural: management aspects related to the policy design, governance, and institutional capacity building.
