Book Description
Advertising brochure for Gilman's Relief Hot Springs, a health and hot springs resort near San Jacinto, California. The Gilman family purchased the Relief Springs Hotel in 1913 and developed it into a well-known hot springs resort boasting four main springs--black sulphur, white sulphur, soda, and lithia. To supplement the hotel built in 1888 by the original owner Sidney Branch, the Gilmans built a large 50-room hotel annex in 1920-1921, and in response to public demand, added private cottages as well. According to Steve Lech, author of Resorts of Riverside County (Charleston, SC: Arcadia Publishing, c2005, paage 79), "Gilman's started out offering the American Plan wherein guests received their meals in a more traditional sit-down environment, this changed in 1922 when the old way was dropped and a cafeteria was added."

Book Description
Many villages of native LuiseƱo Indians were originally located in San Jacinto Valley. When Spanish explorer Don Juan Baptista de Anza of Tubac, Arizona, passed through this area in 1774, he named it San Jacinto, which translates to St. Hyacinth. After Spain ceded the area to Mexico, the Estudillo family of San Diego received a land grant in 1842 that included the San Jacinto Valley, and the settling of immigrants from the east soon followed. The City of San Jacinto was= incorporated in 1888, but two major earthquakes in 1899 and 1918 destroyed all of its brick buildings, which were never again rebuilt. Agriculture crops were the main industry until the 1980s, when the housing boom began, and today San Jacinto is considered a desirable and progressive city to live in.

Book Description
For all the faults attributed to the San Andreas, its one very soothing aspect has been an enormous spiderweb of cracks spreading throughout the geologic formations of what became Riverside County. These fissures yielded springs and grottos of warm waters to which thankful pioneers and snake-oil salesmen alike attributed curative powers. In the 20th century, vacationers seeking relaxation, together with those afflicted with a myriad of maladies, came to Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, Glen Ivy, Murrieta Hot Springs, and a dozen other wide places in the road to bathe in the balmy waters beneath desert breezes.
