This book presents the work of the RILEM Technical Committee 259-ISR. Addressing two complementary but fundamental issues: the kinetics of the reaction, and how this will affect the integrity of the structure (serviceability and strength), it also provides methodology for assessing past deterioration to enable readers to make engineering/science-based predictions concerning future expansion. The book is divided into six major topics: selection and interpretation of optimal monitoring system for structures undergoing expansion to monitor the progress of the swelling evolution and its consequences; development/refinement of current laboratory procedures to determine the kinetics of the reaction i.e. expansion vs (future) time, and to determine the kinetic characteristics of the time-dependent reaction to be used in a finite element simulation; extrapolation of results from structural component laboratory testing; selection of material properties based on data from existing structures affected by the alkali silica reaction or delayed ettringite formation; identification of critical features that should be present in a finite element code, development of test problems for validation, and a survey of relevant programs able to conduct a transient structural analysis of a structure undergoing chemically induced expansion; and lastly guidelines for finite element codes. Cette étude a pour but de compléter et d'améliorer les connaissances reliées à l'expansion du béton générée par la réaction alcalis-silice (RAS). Elle est divisée en deux volets : l'expansion atteinte et l'expansion résiduelle. Dans le cadre du premier volet de recherche, deux essais sont évalués afin de vérifier leur potentiel pour déterminer l'expansion atteinte à ce jour d'un béton affecté de RAS. L'indice d'endommagement interne (DRI) présente d'excellentes relations et permet d'estimer l'expansion du béton de façon assez fiable, et ce, même pour l'expansion due au gel/dégel. La présence ou non d'un entraîneur d'air dans le béton fait grandement varier les résultats. Les essais de chargement cyclique (SDT) n'ont malheureusement pas été effectués et les résultats suivront dans une publication scientifique ultérieure. Dans le cadre du deuxième volet de recherche, l'influence de plusieurs paramètres est évaluée au cours de l'essai d'expansion accélérée. Ces paramètres sont : le rapport eau/ciment du béton, l'état de la surface des éprouvettes (moulée vs. forée), le rapport volumique air/béton dans les contenants, le diamètre des éprouvettes, les mesures de protection contre le lessivage, la durée de mûrissement, ainsi que la nature des alcalis. Le rapport volumique air/béton dans les contenants a une influence majeure sur les résultats d'essais : plus il est élevé, plus le lessivage est important et plus l'expansion est faible. Le diamètre des éprouvettes testées (ou leur surface spécifique, inversement proportionnelle au diamètre), est aussi un paramètre très influent : plus le diamètre est faible, plus le lessivage est important et plus l'expansion est faible. Aucune mesure de protection contre le lessivage ne permet une expansion ultime aussi élevée que celle des éprouvettes non protégées, même si elles réduisent le lessivage. Il semble qu'il y ait un seuil critique de lessivage, aux alentours de 20%, au-delà duquel la courbe d'expansion des éprouvettes plafonne.
