Book Description
Most of us know of the Indo-European roots of European languages, but how did this precursor language take hold and what did Europe look like before it did so? This book explores the continent before the spread of the Indo-Europeans, examines its indigenous population and the contacts it had with Indo-European and Uralic immigrants, and, ultimately, asks how these origins led to the development of that crucial singularity for Europe’s languages. Drawing on archaeology, religious studies, and palaeography, the contributors offer a detailed and comprehensive picture of Europe’s linguistic and, in turn, cultural prehistory.

Fingerprinting the Iron Age: Approaches to identity in the European Iron Age

Fingerprinting the Iron Age: Approaches to identity in the European Iron Age PDF Author: C?t?lin Nicolae Popa
Publisher: Oxbow Books

Book Description
Archaeology has long dealt with issues of identity, and especially with ethnicity, with modern approaches emphasising dynamic and fluid social construction. The archaeology of the Iron Age in particular has engendered much debate on the topic of ethnicity, fuelled by the first availability of written sources alongside the archaeological evidence which has led many researchers to associate the features they excavate with populations named by Greek or Latin writers. Some archaeological traditions have had their entire structure built around notions of ethnicity, around the relationships existing between large groups of people conceived together as forming unitary ethnic units. On the other hand, partly influenced by anthropological studies, other scholars have written forcefully against Iron Age ethnic constructions, such as the Celts. The 24 contributions to this volume focus on the south east Europe, where the Iron Age has, until recently, been populated with numerous ethnic groups with which specific material culture forms have been associated. The first section is devoted to the core geographical area of south east Europe: Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia, as well as Albania and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The following three sections allow comparison with regions further to the west and the south west with contributions on central and western Europe, the British Isles and the Italian peninsula. The volume concludes with four papers which provide more synthetic statements that cut across geographical boundaries, the final contributions bringing together some of the key themes of the volume. The wide array of approaches to identity presented here reflects the continuing debate on how to integrate material culture, protohistoric evidence (largely classical authors looking in on first millennium BC societies) and the impact of recent nationalistic agendas.

AND AS WRITTEN IN THE BIBLE GOD IS AGAINST WOMEN FOR PERPETUITY PDF Author: Maximillien de Lafayette

ISBN: 1365785475
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
Yahweh's injustice, cruelty and crimes against little girls, women, and wives. Published by Times Square Press New York. There is no book, no law, no scroll, and no inscription in the history of humanity, civilizations and religions, which degrades and disgraces women more than the words, the decrees, the laws and the commands of Yahweh (The God of the Hebrews/Israelites) as clearly written ad infinitum in verses of the Bible (The Old Testament). The author's arguments, findings, and conclusions are solely and exclusively based upon the Old Testament (Jewish Bible) and what God (Yahweh) himself said word-for-word about wives, women and girls, and what he ordered or allowed his "Chosen" People to do to wives, women and girls, as written in the Bible (Old Testament). Thus, he presents irrefutable facts and findings without personal interpretation, and free from biased and subjective analyses. He is neither analyzing the Old Testament nor interpreting the Old Testament, the Torah, or the Talmud.

Studies in Culture Contact

Studies in Culture Contact PDF Author: James G. Cusick
Publisher: SIU Press
ISBN: 0809334100
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 513

Book Description
People have long been fascinated about times in human history when different cultures and societies first came into contact with each other, how they reacted to that contact, and why it sometimes occurred peacefully and at other times was violent or catastrophic. Studies in Culture Contact: Interaction, Culture Change, and Archaeology, edited by James G. Cusick, seeks to define the role of culture contact in human history, to identify issues in the study of culture contact in archaeology, and to provide a critical overview of the major theoretical approaches to the study of culture and contact. In this collection of essays, anthropologists and archaeologists working in Europe and the Americas consider three forms of culture contact—colonization, cultural entanglement, and symmetrical exchange. Part I provides a critical overview of theoretical approaches to the study of culture contact, offering assessments of older concepts in anthropology, such as acculturation, as well as more recently formed concepts, including world systems and center-periphery models of contact. Part II contains eleven case studies of specific contact situations and their relationships to the archaeological record, with times and places as varied as pre- and post-Hispanic Mexico, Iron Age France, Jamaican sugar plantations, European provinces in the Roman Empire, and the missions of Spanish Florida. Studies in Culture Contact provides an extensive review of the history of culture contact in anthropological studies and develops a broad framework for studying culture contact’s role, moving beyond a simple formulation of contact and change to a more complex understanding of the amalgam of change and continuity in contact situations.

Possession

Possession PDF Author: Erin L. Thompson
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300208529
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
A riveting account of private art collectors' passion from Roman times to the present Whether it's the discovery of $1.6 billion in Nazi-looted art or the news that Syrian rebels are looting UNESCO archaeological sites to buy arms, art crime commands headlines. Erin Thompson, America's only professor of art crime, explores the dark history of looting, smuggling, and forgery that lies at the heart of many private art collections and many of the world's most renowned museums. Enlivened by fascinating personalities and scandalous events, Possession shows how collecting antiquities has been a way of creating identity, informed by a desire to annex the past while providing an illicit thrill along the way. Thompson's accounts of history's most infamous collectors--from the Roman Emperor Tiberius, who stole a life-sized nude Greek statue for his bedroom, to Queen Christina of Sweden, who habitually pilfered small antiquities from her fellow aristocrats, to Sir William Hamilton, who forced his mistress to enact poses from his collection of Greek vases--are as mesmerizing as they are revealing.
