The second of these, now published, comprises not quite two decades; but it covers the period in which the new German Empire was made - mainly by arms and the man. I have, there fore, as already announced in the preface to my first volume, for the preparation of its successor sought the assistance of my friend Professor Spenser Wilkinson. He is the writer of chapter II, pp. 149 - 170 and 179 - 183, Of Chapter IV, to p. 298, and Of chapter VII, part I, in the present volume. He is, likewise, responsible for the maps which illustrate his text, as well as for the brief war bibliographies (c) while he has, also, given me the benefit of his advice in other parts of this History.
