This report is based upon field investigations of the geology and ground-water resources of Portage County, Ohio, that were started in 1951 and carried on intermittently until 1956. The purpose of the report is to describe the stratigraphy and the bedrock surface with regard to their effect on the ground-water resources of the county. The water-bearing character of the glacial deposits that fill the buried valleys is reported in the discussion of the geology and ground-water conditions in specific townships. The investigation and mapping of the surficial deposits is not part of this report. For this purpose, it has been necessary to map the Devonian, Mississippian, and Pennsylvanian rocks that crop out beneath the glacial drift in the county. The data upon which this report is based have been derived from the field examination of surface exposures of the rocks, from seismic profiles made to determine the configuration of the rock surface beneath the glacial drift, and from the records of several thousand water and oil and gas wells that reported the general lithology and thickness of the consolidated rocks.
