Author: Karen J. Leeder
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 9780198159100
Category : German poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 396
Book Description
This book examines the controversial younger generation of poets who were 'born into' the established socialist state of the German Democratic Republic. Introducing an extraordinary decade of GDR poetry, it focuses on the ways in which this experience is translated into the metaphorical and linguistic structures of their texts, and the ways in which they set about breaking the literary and political boundaries which were imposed upon them, radicalizing notions of the subject, of history, of language, of the poetic enterprise itself. The volume also assesses what will remain - after the fall of the Wall, and the revelations of the 'Stasi' files - of this radical poetic project. This unique study examines the poetry of some fifty writers from both the official and the underground publishing scenes, offering them up as a case-study in the vexed negotiations between aesthetics, ethics, and politics, and as a contribution to the rewriting of German literary history after 1945.

Author: Beth V. Linklater
Publisher: Peter Lang Publishing
ISBN:
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 252
Book Description
Contrary to expectations, sexual constructions in East German literatures are challenging and diverse. They contribute to, and take issue with, developments in aesthetic form and content, enriching and democratising GDR culture. This book provides a thorough survey of East German art from this new perspective, concentrating specifically upon the iconoclastic work of Irmtraud Morgner and Gabriele Stotzer-Kachold. Both authors use the theme of the erotic not simply in order to break taboos, but - and more importantly - to introduce ideas of utopia, identity and feminism into their art.

Practical Ethics
Author: Peter Singer
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139496891
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 353
Book Description
For thirty years, Peter Singer's Practical Ethics has been the classic introduction to applied ethics. For this third edition, the author has revised and updated all the chapters and added a new chapter addressing climate change, one of the most important ethical challenges of our generation. Some of the questions discussed in this book concern our daily lives. Is it ethical to buy luxuries when others do not have enough to eat? Should we buy meat from intensively reared animals? Am I doing something wrong if my carbon footprint is above the global average? Other questions confront us as concerned citizens: equality and discrimination on the grounds of race or sex; abortion, the use of embryos for research and euthanasia; political violence and terrorism; and the preservation of our planet's environment. This book's lucid style and provocative arguments make it an ideal text for university courses and for anyone willing to think about how she or he ought to live.

Weltbild und Bildsprache im Werk Irmtraud Morgners
Author: Hildegard Rossoll
Publisher: Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers
ISBN:
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : de
Pages : 232
Book Description
