From the Preface: The Symposium reviewed the major developments that have marked the growth of Canadian manufacturing industries in the 1960s and considered the key issues likely to affect the important sector in the 1970s. The members of the Symposium concurred that the performance of Canadian manufacturing would have an important influence on Canada's over-all economic development in the decade ahead. Attention was directed particularly to certain basic questions concerning an industrial strategy for Canada, and to a wide range of factors that may affect the growth and competitive position of Canadian manufacturing. In a broad perspective, the effect of international developments, particularly those in the United States, on Canadian manufacturing, were assessed.
