The Routledge Handbook to Regional Development in Central and Eastern Europe

The Routledge Handbook to Regional Development in Central and Eastern Europe PDF Author: Gábor Lux
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1317123948
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 341

Book Description
Twenty-five years into transformation, Central and Eastern European regions have undergone substantial socio-economic restructuring, integrating into European and global networks and producing new patterns of regional differentiation and development. Yet post-socialist modernisation has not been without its contradictions, manifesting in increasing social and territorial inequalities. Recent studies also suggest there are apparent limits to post-socialist growth models, accompanying a new set of challenges within an increasingly uncertain world. Aiming to deliver a new synthesis of regional development issues at the crossroads between ‘post-socialism’ and ‘post-transition’, this book identifies the main driving forces of spatial restructuring in Central and Eastern Europe, and charts the different regional development paths which take shape against the backdrop of post-crisis Europe. A comparative approach is used to highlight common development challenges and the underlying patterns of socio-economic differentiation alike. The issues investigated within the Handbook extend to a discussion of the varied economic consequences of transition, the social structures and institutional systems which underpin development processes, and the broadly understood sustainability of Central and Eastern Europe’s current development model. This book will be of interest to academics and policymakers working in the fields of regional studies, economic geography, development studies and policy.

The Far Northeast

The Far Northeast PDF Author: Kenneth R. Holyoke
Publisher: University of Ottawa Press
ISBN: 0776629662
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 648

Book Description
The Far Northeast: 3000 BP to Contact is the first volume to synthesize archaeological research from across Atlantic Canada and northern New England for the period spanning from 3000 years ago to European contact. Recently, notions of the “Woodland period” in the broader Northeast have drawn scrutiny from experts due to increasing awareness that its hallmarks—such as horticulture, village formation, mortuary ceremonialism, and the advent of various technologies—appear to be less synchronous than once thought. By paying particular attention to the Far Northeast and its unique (yet sometimes marginal) position in Woodland discourse, this work offers a much-needed in-depth look at one of the best-documented cases of hunter-gatherer persistence and adaptation at the eve of European contact. Penned by academic, government, and cultural-resource-management archaeologists, the seventeen chapters in The Far Northeast: 3000 BP to Contact draw on decades of research in considering this period, both in terms of variability within the region, and integration with broader cultural patterns in the Northeast and beyond. The Effectiveness and Limits of EU Conditionality

The Effectiveness and Limits of EU Conditionality PDF Author: Lenka Fedorová
Publisher: LIT Verlag Münster
ISBN: 3643110464
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 235

Book Description
This study examines domestic policies in Slovakia from the collapse of communism in 1989 until its EU accession in 2004. It traces policy changes in Slovak healthcare, regional policy, agriculture, and minority protection, and it assesses the capacity of domestic political actors and external agents to shape the policy arrangements and institutional environment in a democratizing state aspiring to join the EU. The study addresses the issues of democratic transition and consolidation in EU candidate states, evaluates the effectiveness and limits of EU conditionality in the respective policy domains, and contributes to current debates on democratization, Europeanization, and policy transfer. Social Fabric Or Patchwork Quilt

Social Fabric Or Patchwork Quilt PDF Author: Jeff Keshen
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 9781551115443
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 544

Book Description
Both historical and contemporary features of Canadian social welfare are explored in this wide-ranging and in-depth collection. Social Fabric or Patchwork Quilt explores the evolution of the Canadian social welfare state from a system based upon voluntarism and philanthropy to one in which the State's involvement has increased considerably. It also shows how the roles of governments at all levels have changed in recent times. Chapters describe the developing Canadian welfare state from Confederation to the present. Beginning with an integrative framework in the general introduction, the selected essays represent many perspectives: chronological, regional, multidisciplinary and ideological. An important feature of this collection is the consideration of providers and recipients. Such wide-ranging outlooks are possible given the diverse backgrounds of contributors, which include historians, sociologists, social workers, public policy experts and political scientists. As well as historical and sociological studies, topics include key programs (discussed in detail), the quality of services received by principal target groups, new directions in research; some contributions even revisit foundational older works and key government documents.
