Book Description
Excerpt from The Gas, Petrol, and Oil Engine, Vol. 2 The first volume of the new edition of this work was published in 1909, so that three years have been spent in the preparation of the present volume, which deals with practical problems of design, con struction and operation of Gas, Petrol, and Oil Engines. The author has been fortunate in securing the co-operation of Mr. G. A. Burls, in collecting information and writing the book. Chapters I, II, V and XII are by the author Chapters VII, VIII, IX and XI are by Mr. Burls while Chapters III, IV, VI and X are in great part the work of Mr. Burls. The whole work, however, has been the subject of joint discussion, and the book as it now stands correctly represents the opinions of both writers. The aim throughout all the chapters has been the comparison of early and late constructions and the discussion of various problems which have appeared in the course of the development of the various types of engine since the introduction of the Otto cycle in 1876. Chapters I and II deal broadly with the development of four and two-stroke engines, and describe various difficulties which have been encountered and partially overcome; results of operation are given and various tests are dealt with both in the works and in practical Operation in factories. Chapter III deals with igniting arrangements, and describes and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods used, tracing the development which has demonstrated the supremacy of electrical ignition in its best forms. Chapter IV describes governors and governing methods as practised on the Continent and in England and America. Valves and Valve Gears, Vol. 2 PDF Author: Franklin Deronde Furman

ISBN: 9780282396091

Book Description
Excerpt from Valves and Valve Gears, Vol. 2: Gasoline, Gas, and Oil Engines The part of this work on Valves and Valve Gears which relates to internal combustion engines is printed as a separate volume in order to meet the requirements Of varying courses of study, and the needs of those generally who are interested only in gasoline, gas, or Oil engines. This will enable those who wish to study particular cases to do so without being encumbered with literature relating to the steam engine when only matter concerning the internal combustion engine is desired, or vice versa. Those who wish to make a general study Of the methods of oper ating the several types Of internal combustion engines should first study Sections III and IV Of Volume I of this work. In these sec tions it is shown that seven fundamental valve forms underlie all valves in general use, and that six fundamental mechanisms, with their variations, underlie all valve gears whether applied to internal combustion engines or to steam engines. An understanding Of how the whole subject of valves and valve gears for all prime movers can be reduced to so few fundamental forms should materially aid in obtaining a grasp Of the subject as it is applied, in the present volume, to practical gasoline, gas, and Oil engines. The preface given in Volume I applies to this work on Valves and Valve Gears as a whole, and the comments and acknowledgments there made refer to this second volume as well as to the first. It is. Book Description
Excerpt from Gas and Petroleum Engines The suitability Of oil engines for the purpose has awakened a widespread interest in them. The Editor therefore hopes that this little volume will be especially welcome to non-technical readers who like to keep ahead Of the times in matters Of such universal importance. One chapter deals exclusively with the theory of the gas engine, but the non-technical mind Should have no fear, for mathematics have been as far as possible avoided. It may also serve to dispel wrongful notions concerning the practical limits of the efficiency of gas engines which. Excerpt from Gas, Gasoline and Oil Engines And this is equally true whether you are a man or a woman, a boy or a girl, for it is only a question of time until you will find yourself face to face With one of them. If you are ignorant of how they are made and work you will, more than likely, go through the harrowing experiences and make the costly mis takes that countless others have made before you. This is a great pity, for it is easy to know all about gas, gasoline and oil engines if you start right, and to do so all you need is to read this book through carefully. Book Description
Excerpt from The Koerting Double-Acting Two-Cycle Gas Engine HE discovery of the fact that gases Of low heating capacity could be used effectively in gas engines has created a demand for one of higher grade than was previously called for. This demand for high - class engines was more pronounced in Europe than in this country for the reason that the relative cheapness of steam coal here prevented the general introduction of gas-producer plants. Book Description
Excerpt from Gas Engine Theory and Design IT has been the aim of the author to prepare a book for all who are interested in gas engines - students, draughts men, engineers, as well as the men who operate gas engines of any kind, and wish to become better acquainted with the theory and the why of many things. The book should be of special interest to the technical student, and was, in fact, first prepared for the engineering classes at the Michigan Agricultural College, since no suit able text - book could be found. The reading-matter throughout has been arranged care fully and with a definite object in view. The large number of figures illustrating the text have been made as simple as possible. It has also been the aim of the author to make the treatment clear and concise, and for this reason every paragraph should be studied - not merely read over.
