Historiography of Mathematics in the 19th and 20th Centuries

Historiography of Mathematics in the 19th and 20th Centuries PDF Author: Volker R. Remmert
Publisher: Birkhäuser
ISBN: 3319396498
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
This book addresses the historiography of mathematics as it was practiced during the 19th and 20th centuries by paying special attention to the cultural contexts in which the history of mathematics was written. In the 19th century, the history of mathematics was recorded by a diverse range of people trained in various fields and driven by different motivations and aims. These backgrounds often shaped not only their writing on the history of mathematics, but, in some instances, were also influential in their subsequent reception. During the period from roughly 1880-1940, mathematics modernized in important ways, with regard to its content, its conditions for cultivation, and its identity; and the writing of the history of mathematics played into the last part in particular. Parallel to the modernization of mathematics, the history of mathematics gradually evolved into a field of research with its own journals, societies and academic positions. Reflecting both a new professional identity and changes in its primary audience, various shifts of perspective in the way the history of mathematics was and is written can still be observed to this day. Initially concentrating on major internal, universal developments in certain sub-disciplines of mathematics, the field gradually gravitated towards a focus on contexts of knowledge production involving individuals, local practices, problems, communities, and networks. The goal of this book is to link these disciplinary and methodological changes in the history of mathematics to the broader cultural contexts of its practitioners, namely the historians of mathematics during the period in question.

Anachronisms in the History of Mathematics

Anachronisms in the History of Mathematics PDF Author: Niccolò Guicciardini
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108883281
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 394

Book Description
The controversial matters surrounding the notion of anachronism are difficult ones: they have been broached by literary and art critics, by philosophers, as well as by historians of science. This book adopts a bottom-up approach to the many problems concerning anachronism in the history of mathematics. Some of the leading scholars in the field of history of mathematics reflect on the applicability of present-day mathematical language, concepts, standards, disciplinary boundaries, indeed notions of mathematics itself, to well-chosen historical case studies belonging to the mathematics of the past, in European and non-European cultures. A detailed introduction describes the key themes and binds the various chapters together. The interdisciplinary and transcultural approach adopted allows this volume to cover topics important for history of mathematics, history of the physical sciences, history of science, philosophy of mathematics, history of philosophy, methodology of history, non-European science, and the transmission of mathematical knowledge across cultures.

Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States

Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309142393
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 348

Book Description
Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.

Changing Images in Mathematics

Changing Images in Mathematics PDF Author: Umberto Bottazini
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 113469881X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 318

Book Description
This book focuses on some of the major developments in the history of contemporary (19th and 20th century) mathematics as seen in the broader context of the development of science and culture. Avoiding technicalities, it displays the breadth of contrasting images of mathematics favoured by different countries, schools and historical movements, showing how the conception and practice of mathematics changed over time depending on the cultural and national context. Thus it provides an original perspective for embracing the richness and variety inherent in the development of mathematics. Attention is paid to the interaction of mathematics with themes whose proper treatment have been neglected by the traditional historiography of the discipline, such as the relationship between mathematics, statistics and medicine.

Writing the History of Mathematics: Its Historical Development

Writing the History of Mathematics: Its Historical Development PDF Author: Joseph W. Dauben
Publisher: Birkhäuser
ISBN:
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 736

Book Description
As an historiographic monograph, this book offers the first detailed survey of the professional evolution and significance of an entire discipline devoted to the history of science. Basically, Writing the History of Mathematics provides both an intellectual and a social history of the development of the subject from the first such effort written by the ancient Greek author Eudemus in the Fourth Century BC, to the founding of the international journal, Historia Mathematica, by Kenneth O. May in the early 1970s. A special project of the International Commission on History of Mathematics, this work is the result of more than ten years of collaboration by a team of 32 experts, each writing about the history of mathematics in their own countries or regions, and drawing upon extensive research and archival study. Divided into three parts, Writing the History of Mathematics begins with country-by-country surveys from ancient times to the end of the 20th century, covering virtually every part of the world where the history of mathematics has been written. In addition to individuals, such institutions as universities, academies, institutes, libraries, and the like are also covered, including journals, encyclopedias, and other collective projects that promote history of mathematics. The second part of the book contains biographies of 300 historians of mathematics, along with bibliographies of their works and relevant biographical sources. The third part of the book provides a comprehensive bibliography of the most important literature devoted to the history of mathematics in Western languages. The book also includes portraits of twenty-five historians of mathematics.
