Book Description
The results obtained on the Jornada road northeast of Las Cruces suggest that for the light wind, midday conditions tested much of the dust is transported vertically and little of the PM10 and PM2.5 is redeposited near the road. [...] To be effective, a plan for Doña County must consider the unique local conditions, including the arid climate, the developments and agriculture in the river valley, and the transport of particulates across the international border. [...] S.- Mexican border • Dust suspension and transport from unpaved roads; the road dust measurements were taken at various distances from the edge of the road and at various heights above the ground 4 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY/APPROACHES This section describes the study location, the locations of the monitoring sites on the road, the instrumentation used to measure ambient PM10 concentrations and the test. [...] The basic goal was to collocate the DustTraks with the OPC and the TEOM and to see how the three different instruments varied in their PM10 values. [...] The data at fixed heights were used to calculate the constants for an exponential dust profile at the three distances by the least squares fit of the log-transformed data to the equation parameters.

Handbook of Chemical Mass Transport in the Environment

Handbook of Chemical Mass Transport in the Environment PDF Author: Louis J. Thibodeaux
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1420047558
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 636

Book Description
A comprehensive account of the state of the science of environmental mass transport Edited by Louis J. Thibodeaux and Donald Mackay, renowned experts in this field, the Handbook of Chemical Mass Transport in the Environment covers those processes which are critically important for assessing chemical fate, exposure, and risk. In a comprehensive and authoritative format, this unique handbook provides environmental chemists, geoscientists, engineers, and modelers with the essential capabilities to understand and quantify transport. In addition, it offers a one-stop resource on environmental mass transfer and mass transport coefficient estimation methods for all genres. The book begins by discussing mass transport fundamentals from an environmental perspective. It introduces the concept of mobility — key to environmental fate, since transport must occur prior to any reaction or partitioning within the natural multimedia compartments. The fugacity approach to environmental mass transfer and the conventional approach are examined. This is followed by a description of the individual mass transport processes and the appropriate flux equations required for a quantitative expression. The editors have identified 41 individual processes believed to be the most environmentally significant, which form the basis for the remainder of the book Using a consistent format for easy reference, each chapter: Introduces the specific processes Provides a detailed qualitative description Presents key theoretical mathematical formulations Describes field or laboratory measurements of transport parameters Gives data tables and algorithms for numerical estimates Offers a guide for users familiar with the process who are seeking a direct pathway to obtain the numerical coefficients Presents computed example problems, case studies and/or exercises with worked-through solutions and answers The final chapter presents the editors’ insight into future needs and emerging priorities. Accessible and relevant to a broad range of science and engineering users, this volume captures the state of the transport science and practice in this critical area.

Control of Fugitive and Hazardous Dusts

Control of Fugitive and Hazardous Dusts PDF Author: Chatten Cowherd
Publisher: Noyes Publications
ISBN: 9780815512530
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 471

Book Description
Describes methods of controlling contaminated fugitive dust originating from contaminated land surfaces. The contaminated dust may be released by three basic mechanisms: vehicle reentrainment, cleanup activities, and wind erosion. Different dust suppressant techniques are used to treat each mechanism.

Paleoclimatology and Paleometeorology: Modern and Past Patterns of Global Atmospheric Transport

Paleoclimatology and Paleometeorology: Modern and Past Patterns of Global Atmospheric Transport PDF Author: Margaret Leinen
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400909950
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 904

Book Description
The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Paleoclimatology and Paleometeorology: Modem and Past Patterns of Global Atmospheric Transport" (held at Oracle, Arizona, USA from November 17-19, 1987) brought together atmospheric chemists, physicists, and meteorologists who study the origin and transport of modem-day mineral and biological aerosols with geologists and paleobotanists who study the sedimentary record of eolian and hydrologic processes along with modelers who study and conceptualize the processes influencing atmospheric transport at present and in the past. Presentations at the workshop provided a guide to our present knowledge of the entire spectrum of processes and phenomena important to the generation, transport, and deposition of eolian terrigenous material that ultimately becomes part of the geologic record and the modeling techniques that used to represent these processes. The presenta tions on the geologic record of eolian deposition documented our present understanding of the na~e and causes of climate change on time scales of the last glacial ages (tens of thousands of years) to time scales over which the arrangement of continents, mountains, and oceans has changed sub stantially (tens of millions of years). There has been a growing recognition of the importance of global climatic changes to the future well-being of humanity. In particular, the climatic response to human alterations to the earth's surface and chemical composition has led to concern over the agricultural, ecological, and societal impacts of such potential global changes.

Sustainability Guidelines for the Structural Engineer

Sustainability Guidelines for the Structural Engineer PDF Author: Structural Engineering Institute. Sustainability Committee
Publisher: Amer Society of Civil Engineers
ISBN: 9780784411193
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 315

Book Description
The Sustainability Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineer s Structural Engineering Institute (ASCE SEI) prepared these guidelines to advance the understanding of sustainability in the structural community and to incorporate concepts of sustainability into structural engineering standards and practices. This book will educate and guide structural engineers as they meet the challenge to design and construct a sustainable built environment. The guidelines are organized into five sections: Sustainable Design and Construction, Sustainable Strategies, Building Materials, Infrastructure, and Case Studies. Although many of the subjects presented are related, each section and the related subsections have been written to stand alone, allowing this report to be used as a practical reference. This report was written for structural engineers, but related disciplines will also benefit from the contents. The book includes an important section on infrastructure because, many of the concepts and ideas presented in this guide relate to infrastructure, as well as design and construction.
