Book Description
*This Book is annotated (it contains a detailed biography of the author). *An active Table of Contents has been added by the publisher for a better customer experience. *This book has been checked and corrected for spelling errors. But thirty years have elapsed since the death of Daniel Webster, and there is already danger that, so far as young people are concerned, he will become an historic reminiscence. Schoolboys, who declaim the eloquent extracts from his speeches which are included in all the school speakers, are indeed able to form some idea of his great oratorical powers and the themes which called them forth; but I have found that young classical students, as a rule, know more of Cicero's life than of his. It seems to me eminently fitting that the leading incidents in the life of our great countryman, his struggles for an education, the steps by which he rose to professional and political distinction, should be made familiar to American boys. I have therefore essayed a "story biography," which I have tried to write in such a manner as to make it attractive to young people, who are apt to turn away from ordinary biographies, in the fear that they may prove dull.

Book Description
Horatio Alger Jr. January 13, 1832 - July 18, 1899) was an American writer, best known for his many young adult novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on the United States during the Gilded Age.All of Alger's juvenile novels share essentially the same theme, known as the "Horatio Alger myth" a teenage boy works hard to escape poverty. Often it is not hard work that rescues the boy from his fate but rather some extraordinary act of bravery or honesty. The boy might return a large sum of lost money or rescue someone from an overturned carriage. This brings the boy-and his plight-to the attention of a wealthy individual.Alger secured his literary niche in 1868 with the publication of his fourth book, Ragged Dick, the story of a poor bootblack's rise to middle-class respectability. This novel was a huge success. His many books that followed were essentially variations on Ragged Dick and featured casts of stock characters: the valiant hard-working, honest youth, the noble mysterious stranger, the snobbish youth, and the evil, greedy squire. In the 1870s, Alger's fiction was growing stale. His publisher suggested he tour the American West for fresh material to incorporate into his fiction. Alger took a trip to California, but the trip had little effect on his writing: he remained mired in the tired theme of "poor boy makes good." The backdrops of these novels, however, became the American West rather than the urban environments of the northeastern United States.

Book Description
Originally published in 1882. The life of Daniel Webster is recounted in this fictionalized biography, from his youth on a New Hampshire farm to his distinguished career in Congress. Alger's biographical account of the life of one of the nation's foremost orators, Daniel Webster, details his life from his early days as a young farm boy to the culmination of his political career as a respected member of the Senate. During his climb to greatness, Webster met many people who would become his friends, coworkers, and also be the biggest influences of his life. - Pavilion Press Daniel Webster (January 18, 1782 - October 24, 1852) was an American statesman who twice served in the United States House of Representatives, representing New Hampshire (1813-1817) and Massachusetts (1823-1827), served as a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts (1827-1841 and 1845-1850) and was twice the United States Secretary of State, under Presidents William Henry Harrison and John Tyler (1841-1843) and Millard Fillmore (1850-1852).[2] Along with James G. Blaine, he is one of only two people who have served as Secretary of State under three presidents. He also sought the Whig Party nomination for President three times: in 1836, 1840 and 1852. - Wikipedia

Book Description
A new retelling of the original film, A New Hope, for middle grade audience by New York Times best-selling author Alexandra Bracken. A retelling of the first film of the original Star Wars trilogy as you've never read it before. Perfect for old and new fans alike. This story begins as so many do: a long, long time ago ... in a place far beyond the glittering stars you see in your night sky. In the time of the Old Republic, hundreds of star systems lived together in peace and prosperity, protected by an ancient order of warriors, the Jedi. But a tide of darkness swept through the galaxy, as unstoppable as it was terrifying, wiping out even the most powerful fighters. Now an evil empire rules the stars, slowly extinguishing the last traces of light and hope in its crushing grip. This is the story of three people who cross paths with destiny--who are in the wrong place at the right time. Together, these three will prove there's more to them than meets the eye ... and they just might be the galaxy's only hope for the future.
