Book Description
Excerpt from The Rise and Fall, of Free Speech in America But how is the moving picture art to express these great lessons of history, and convey the morals of the present day, contrasted with their attendant vices. If it is to be muzzled by a petty and narrow-minded censorship, a censorship which can see no valuable message in vice punished, a censorship which refuses to have life portrayed in its actuality, with its sins and virtues. Its joys and sadness. That we may learn the better way. According to the theory of the censors. The moving picture producers must slavishly avoid the truth, for fear of treading on the toes of races. Politicians, and individuals. With a censorship board dictating what pictures are to be produced and displayed, truth is not to be pictured, but a sugar-coated, virtuously garbed version alone can be presented, in order to satisfy the public mentors of our so-called morals. Book Description
Excerpt from Freedom of Speech and the Espionage Act: Address Before the New Jersey State Bar Association at Atlantic City, N. J., June 18, 1921 In this country there were millions of American citizens of German and Austrian birth or descent, and before we entered the War many of these had evinced their sympathy with the cause of the Central powers. While the great body of these citizens remained loyal and contributed their full share to the success of our arms, there were some who remained at heart in sympathy with Germany, some who were apathetic, and some who were undoubtedly disloyal in thought and only lacked the opportunity to be disloyal in act. Freedom of Speech in Canada (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Francis Reginald Scott

Book Description
Excerpt from Freedom of Speech in Canada Our tradition Of liberty necessarily covers more than this belief in the value of free discussion. It includes also certain allied liberties, and for its effective enjoyment it requires the existence of certain recognized conditions. It is perhaps im possible to isolate the particular safeguards for freedom of speech from the complex Of institutions and practices that make up a given social environment. Freedom has well been defined as a condition under which activity takes place, and consequently is affected by all the forces religious, political, economic that mould the habits Of a people. One might say, for instance, that education is necessary to intellectual liberty, and hence to freedom Of speech. An ignorant person may be at liberty to speak, but he will have little to say. SO too the individual is not free whose education has firmly riveted on his mind a fixed pattern Of ideas. The enquiry here leads us into the field of psychology and other subjects alien to this paper. Again, the problem Of freedom Of speech, as Of freedom in general, is inseparably bound up with the wider question of the distribution of wealth and the nature of the social relationships between man and man. A concentration of wealth means a concentration Of freedom in the same hands. The wealthy man who speaks his mind has nothing but the law to fear if that; the employee will fear for his job as well. There is grave danger to freedom of speech in our modern industrial society if the contract Of employment can be broken at the mere whim of the employer.
