Blessed Among Us

Blessed Among Us PDF Author: Robert Ellsberg
Publisher: Liturgical Press
ISBN: 0814647456
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 792

Book Description
Since the early centuries, Christians have held up the saints as models of living the Gospel of Jesus Christ. While the church officially recognizes a relatively small number of saints, the actual roster is infinitely wider. Blessed Among Us explores this eclectic “cloud of witnesses”—lay and religious, single and married, canonized and not, and even non-Christians whose faith and wisdom may illuminate our path. Brought to life in the evocative storytelling of Robert Ellsberg, they inspire the moral imagination and give witness to the myriad ways of holiness. In two stories per day for a full calendar year, Ellsberg sketches figures from biblical times to the present age and from all corners of this world—ordinary figures whose extraordinary lives point to the new age in the world to come. Blessed Among Us is drawn from Ellsberg’s acclaimed column of the same name in Give Us This Day, a monthly resource for daily prayer published by Liturgical Press.

Franz Jagerstatter PDF Author: Putz, Erna
Publisher: Orbis Books
ISBN: 1608335917
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 390

Book Description
Franz Jèagerstèatter, an Austrian farmer, devoted husband and father, and devout Catholic, was executed in 1943 for refusing to serve in the Nazi army. Before taking this stand Jèagerstèatter had consulted both his pastor and his local bishop, who instructed him to do his duty and to obey the law - an instruction that violated his conscience. For many years Jèagerstèatter's solitary witness was honored by the Catholic peace movement, while viewed with discomfort by many of his fellow Austrians. Now, with his beatification in 2007, his example has been embraced by the universal church.

Not Forgotten

Not Forgotten PDF Author: George Weigel
Publisher: Ignatius Press
ISBN: 1621644154
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
The world is full of interesting people, and it has been George Weigel's good fortune to have known many such personalities in a variety of fields: politics, religion, the arts and sciences, journalism, the academy, entertainment, and sports. In this collection of reminiscences and elegies, the best-selling author of the definitive biography of Pope Saint John Paul II remembers these men and women from inside the convictions that formed them. Whether he is sketching the lives of Nobel Prize–winning scientists, major league baseball managers, princes of the Church, television personalities, or history-making political leaders, Weigel tries to understand, and help readers understand, the deep truths of the human condition illuminated by each of these not-forgotten lives. Written with verve, insight, and an appreciation for the consequential lives that have touched his own, Not Forgotten fills out the autobiographical portrait that George Weigel began painting in Lessons in Hope: My Unexpected Life with Saint John Paul II, while offering a backstage view of some of the men and women who have shaped the turbulent history of our times. The 60 intriguing lives that he writes about are a wide diversity of unique characters and personalities, including Albert Einstein, William F. Buckley, Flannery O’Connor, Franz Jägerstätter, John Paul II, Jackie Robinson, Charles Krauthammer, Sophie Scholl, Henry Hyde, James Schall, S.J., Dietrich Von Hildebrand, Charles Colson, Fr Richard J. Neuhaus and many more.

German Catholics and Hitler's Wars

German Catholics and Hitler's Wars PDF Author: Gordon C. Zahn
Publisher: University of Notre Dame Pess
ISBN: 0268161704
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 188

Book Description
Prior to the outbreak of World War II, nearly forty thousand German Catholics were involved in the German Catholic Peace League, a movement that caused many people in various countries to seriously reconsider the dimension of pacifism in their faith. During the course of the War, however, many of these same German Catholics raised no serious objection to serving in Germany's armies or swearing allegiance to Adolph Hitler. First published in 1962, German Catholics and Hitler's Wars created a furor, ultimately causing a serious reevaluation of church-state relationships and, in particular, of the morality of war. This work began as an attempt to understand the demise of the German Catholic Peace League. But because of various factors, including the destruction of vital records, Gordon C. Zahn began to consider the behavior of German Catholics in general and the evidence of their almost total conformity to the war demands of the Nazi regime. Using sociological analysis, he argues convincingly for the existence of a super-effective system of social controls, and of a selection between the competing values of Catholicism and nationalism. Although Zahn never speculates, conclusions are inescapable, chief among them that the traditional Catholic doctrine of the "just war" has ceased to be operative for Catholics in the modern world.

Unbroken Will

Unbroken Will PDF Author: Bernhard Rammerstorfer
Publisher: Rammerstorfer
ISBN: 9783950246216
Category : Concentration camp inmates
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Although Engleitner and Adolf Hitler grew up in the same province in Austria and shared the same cultural background and education system, the convictions and attitudes they developed were diametrically opposed. Whereas Hitler caused untold suffering to millions as a merciless mass murderer, Engleitner devoted his life to peace, refusing to buckle even in the face of death. Why would a man facing imprisonment and unspeakable suffering in a Nazi concentration camp, chose not to sign a document giving him his freedom? Instead he submitted to Nazi persecution, enduring imprisonment in Buchenwald, Niederhagen, and Ravensbruck concentration camps, rather than renouncing his faith as one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
