Book Description
A new edition of the first book by photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher, featuring framework houses of the Siegen region of Germany. Bernd and Hilla Becher have profoundly influenced the international photography world over the past several decades. Their unique genre, which falls somewhere between topological documentation and conceptual art, is in line with the aesthetics of such early-twentieth-century masters of German photography as Karl Blossfeldt, Germaine Krull, Albert Renger-Patzsch, and August Sander. Framework Houses, their first and most famous book, was originally published in Germany in 1977 and quickly went out of print. This new edition of that classic work takes advantage of reproduction and printing technologies not available in 1977. Most of the houses in the book were built between 1870 and 1914 in the Siegen region of Germany, one of the oldest iron-producing areas of Europe. The houses were built by immigrants who came to work in the mines or blast furnace plants. In 1790 a law was enacted to save wood for iron production by preventing its excessive use for house-building. The law prescribed the amount of lumber structurally required and forbade the construction of elements serving only ornamental purposes. It also specified the maximum strength for beams, sills, cornerposts, and studs. A functional framework, combined with neoclassical proportions, determined the new type of house; it was also applied to other buildings such as barns, churches, schools, inns, shops, factories, and mine structures.* Not for sale in France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and Austria

Framework for the World

Framework for the World PDF Author: David Rhind
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 9780470244401
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 358

Book Description
framework Framework for the World. The geographical framework for the world is so fundamental it affects the lives of everyone on earth. On top of this 'template' virtually all other kinds of information are collected and displayed, ranging from population and socio-economic statistics, through environmental data of all kinds to asset registers such as the location of underground pipes and cables. For many years, the framework comprised simple topographic paper maps. Increasingly it is formed by topographic digital databases, from which maps and other products can be 'spun off'. These maps and databases have been created by a branch of national government, the National Mapping Organizations. At present, however, there are large variations in the content, quality and currency of the mapping and many countries have not yet converted all their maps into digital format. The world of NMOs is in turmoil, beset by rapid changes in technology, higher expectations from users of information and radical changes in the ways in which governments operate. This book describes how different approaches are being taken in policy and practical terms in different countries to face these common challenges. It also describes how global - as compared to purely national - needs are emerging for GI and how this demand is being met. The mutation of some national mapping organisations into geographical information utilities and the growth of national geographical information systems are outlined. Framework for the World is developed in 21 chapters written by senior managers involved with the framework from many different countries and drawn from both civilian and military organizations, from the United Nations and from the users of geographical frameworks. For the World

Freedom Within a Framework

Book Description
Freedom Within a Framework: Hearing the Voice of the Customer on the Factory Floor (978-0-367-08577-3, K406714) Shelving Guide: Business and Management/Customer Satisfaction/Quality This book shows you how to harmonize three business functions to address customer needs by using a novel approach that combines Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) and Continuous Improvement tools. The DFSS tool used is the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) process, which is also known as the House of Quality (HOQ). Although these are techniques reserved for the design of new products, the book illustrates how the HOQ helps translate exactly what customers specifically find important about your products. In addition, if customers are experiencing issues with that product, it helps map those issues and prioritizes the Critical to Quality (CTQ) parameters. Because the HOQs tie the Voice of the Customer to CTQs, it continues to connect to the product design and ends with manufacturing process variables. This linkage makes this idea and approach unique. Stopping there may show that there is linkage between the customer and manufacturing process variables, but moving ahead, we must also connect the functions within the business that provides the product. The book helps define the key business function as three large business functions that must work as one cohesive and unified team. These functions are: commercial (sales and marketing), R&D (product properties and services), and operations (product quality). Connecting these functions involves many colleagues, and a very effective communication process among the three is vital for the success of the product and customer satisfaction. Understanding the voice of the customer is paramount—not doing so could lead to product performance issues and loss of market share. In addition, repeated customer dissatisfaction permeates internal workplace culture—employees begin to feel that they are producing products disconnected from end users’ needs and wants.
