The Search for Identity in the Narrative of Rosa Montero

The Search for Identity in the Narrative of Rosa Montero PDF Author: Vanessa Knights
Publisher: Edwin Mellen Press
ISBN:
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 364

Book Description
Rosa Montero is one of a group of women writers who came to prominence during the late 1970s and early 1980s, a period often referred to as the boom of women's writing in Spain. This study traces the socio- historical conditions which led to the boom, addresses the Spanish ambivalence towards the mother figure within the Spanish feminist movement, and discusses the use of metafiction on the creation of life narrative for women. Deals with the alternative figure of the spinster, examines the fantastic as a mode of discourse, and discusses the increasing focus on discourse with Montero's narrative. The author teaches contemporary Hispanic literary and cultural studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Gender Justice and Legal Pluralities

Gender Justice and Legal Pluralities PDF Author: Rachel Sieder
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136191577
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 249

Book Description
Gender Justice and Legal Pluralities: Latin American and African Perspectives examines the relationship between legal pluralities and the prospects for greater gender justice in developing countries. Rather than asking whether legal pluralities are ‘good’ or ‘bad’ for women, the starting point of this volume is that legal pluralities are a social fact. Adopting a more anthropological approach to the issues of gender justice and women’s rights, it analyzes how gendered rights claims are made and responded to within a range of different cultural, social, economic and political contexts. By examining the different ways in which legal norms, instruments and discourses are being used to challenge or reinforce gendered forms of exclusion, contributing authors generate new knowledge about the dynamics at play between the contemporary contexts of legal pluralities and the struggles for gender justice. Any consideration of this relationship must, it is concluded, be located within a broader, historically informed analysis of regimes of governance.

Governing in a Global World

Governing in a Global World PDF Author: Maria J. D'Agostino
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317406877
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 220

Book Description
Governing in a Global World captures the panorama of women governing around the world. Even though the modern era marks history’s greatest advancements for women, worldwide they hold fewer than 30 percent of decision-making positions and are often missing from negotiating tables where policies are made and conflicts resolved. The opening chapters present trends and context for studying women in public service by focusing on path-setters across the globe, the status of women in the world’s executive and legislative bodies, and their participation in public service across several nations. Later chapters examine power, leadership and representation of women in public service, with several chapters looking at women governing from a regional perspective in the Middle East, Sub Sahara Africa, Latin America, and China. The final chapter presents empirical evidence that shows how policies to increase women’s representation in the public arena reduce gender inequality more than any other policy intervention. Taken together, the chapters illustrate the worldwide importance of, and challenges to, promoting gender equality and women governing.

Land Reform Revisited

Land Reform Revisited PDF Author: Femke Brandt
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 900436255X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 297

Book Description
Land Reform Revisited engages with contemporary debates on land reform and agrarian transformation in South Africa. The volume offers insights into post-apartheid transformation dynamics through the lens of agency and state making. The chapters written by emerging scholars are based on extensive qualitative research and their analysis highlights the ways in which people negotiate and contest land reform realities and politics. By focusing on the diverse meanings of land and competing interpretations of what constitutes success and failure in land reform Brandt and Mkodzongi insist on looking beyond the productivity discourses guiding research and policy making in the field towards an informed view from below. Contributors are: Kezia Batisai, Femke Brandt, Sarah Bruchhausen, Nerhene Davis, Elene Cloete, Tariro Kamuti, Tarminder Kaur, Grasian Mkodzongi, Camalita Naicker, Fani Ncapayi, Mnqobi Ngubane, and Chizuko Sato.
