One Woman and Four Others

One Woman and Four Others PDF Author: Mireya Robles
Publisher: Trafford Publishing
ISBN: 1426980124
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
One Woman and Four Others describes, in the first person, the childhood, the adolescence and the young adulthood of a woman born in Cuba in the middle thirties, who subsequently emigrates to the United States. The first part of the novel depicts the joyous wonder of an emotionally and artistically sensitive child discovering the world that surrounds her in an accurate portrayal of a particular geography and of a well-defined epoch. Yet, the real subjects of One Woman and Four Others are the passage of time and its impact on the growth of a human being, and the sensation of transitoriness of life that impels us to cling to the memories of our past. In this sense Robles’s novel can be compared to Marcel Proust’s A la recherche du temps perdu – In Search of Lost Time. The figure of the mother dominates the whole book. For Proust and for Robles the persistent presence of the mother during the entire life of the protagonists is, evidently, related to the search for lost time. Among the four women loved by the narrator of One Woman and Four Others the most important is Marisol, whose influence can be felt throughout the novel and who affects all the other love relationships of the protagonist. Surviving the Shark

Surviving the Shark PDF Author: Jonathan Kathrein
Publisher: Skyhorse Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 1620876876
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 199

Book Description
In Surviving the Shark, Jonathan Kathrein describes his incredible shark attack experience. The book covers all aspects of Kathrein’s survival, beginning with the eerie moments just before the attack, when something smashes into Kathrein’s hand as he paddles on his board, waiting for a wave off Stinson Beach in northern California. Realizing it is probably shark, and possibly a great white, Kathrein tries to paddle away, furiously trying to make it toward shore, where he sees some of his friends on the beach. But it is too late, as the great white returns, slams into him, then grabs his leg and pulls him underwater, thrashing him back and forth, trying to rip his leg off. How Kathrein is able to escape and make his way to shore, despite his horrific wounds, is nothing short of amazing. But that’s just the beginning, as he now faces months of physical and mental rehabilitation, all the while dealing with the constant media attention that the attack has generated. Gradually, with the help of his family and friends, Kathrein makes a recovery. Today, Kathrein gives lectures on shark conservation, as well as on such topics as avoiding shark attacks when you’re in the water. In this book, he not only writes of his ordeal, but also delves into shark behavior, and explains his desire to spread shark awareness. There is also an underlying theme of tremendous familial love and Kathrein’s extreme fervor for life.

I'm Dyin' Here

I'm Dyin' Here PDF Author: Tim Grobaty
Publisher: SCB Distributors
ISBN: 194193207X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
Long Beach Press-Telegram writer Tim Grobaty was promoted to columnist at his newspaper back when it was still a glamorous and coveted job. In I’m Dyin’ Here, the author means two things: He’ll likely die at the job that he’s spent nearly four decades doing, and at the same time his profession, too, is seeing its last days. Weaving together personal history and a selection of columns written over the course of his storied career, Grobaty offers readers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a dying breed: the local columnist. With everyday life — fatherhood, holidays, suburbia, and random encounters with animals — serving as fodder for his column, Grobaty reveals his sources of motivation and vulnerability, all the while struggling to maintain relevance in a rapidly changing industry.

After a While You Just Get Used to It

After a While You Just Get Used to It PDF Author: Gwendolyn Knapp
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 159240913X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
A vibrant new voice ups the self-deprecating memoir ante with tragicomic tales of her dysfunctional life in swampland Florida and America’s Big Easy A dive bar palm reader who calls herself the Disco Queen Taiwan; a slumlord with a penis-of-the-day LISTSERV; and Betty, the middle-aged Tales of the Cocktail volunteer who soils her pants on a party bus and is dealt with in the worst possible way. These are just a few of the unforgettable characters who populate Gwendolyn Knapp’s hilarious and heartbreaking—yet ultimately uplifting—memoir debut, After a While You Just Get Used to It. Growing up in a dying breed of eccentric Florida crackers, Knapp thought she had it rough—what with her pack rat mother, Margie; her aunt Susie, who has fewer teeth than prison stays; and Margie’s bipolar boyfriend, John. But not long after Knapp moves to New Orleans, Margie packs up her House of Hoarders and follows along. As if Knapp weren’t struggling enough to keep herself afloat, working odd jobs and trying to find love while suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, the thirty-year-old realizes that she’s never going to escape her family’s unendingly dysfunctional drama. Knapp honed her writing chops and distinctive Southern Gothic–humor style writing short pieces and participating in the renowned reading series Literary Death Match. Now, like bestselling authors Jenny Lawson, Laurie Notaro, and Julie Klausner before her, Knapp bares her sad and twisted life for readers everywhere to enjoy.

Book Description
You've heard of second chance romance, but what about third time's the charm? After being divorced three years, Megan Adams is desperate for marriage and a family before it's too late. When she tries to help her friend Shark upgrade his rugby team's reputation in the community, her attraction to him is rekindled all over again. Could he ever think of her as more than a friend--or is she risking one heck of a shark bite? When you score in rugby, it's called a try. When it comes to scoring with the ladies, Shark Kelly usually doesn't have to try. But when the captain of his rugby team takes a liking to his friend Megan, he tries to stop the jealous feelings he never expected to have. And there might be a lot of other things he'd be willing to try--if Megan is brave enough to swim with a shark. Author's Note: Thought the rest of the series is fairly light and funny, Shark just refused to conform. This book, though it does have its funny moments, has deeper and heavier themes than the previous books in the series. I promise you'll understand why by the end, though! Thanks for reading! Shark Bite is part of the Romance in Rehoboth Series. If you like your romcoms sweet, funny and semi-clean, if you enjoy a small town setting, and if you like your heroines curvy, strong, and a little bit snarky, then by the time you're done reading, you're gonna want to move to Rehoboth Beach! It's a real place--in Delaware. I know, right? Delaware has beaches and people actually go there? On purpose? I'm as surprised as you are. These books can be read in any order, but if you're one of those types... Then here ya go: Book 1: Music Man (Claire and Jack's Story) Book 2: The Flip (Sonnet and Drew's Story) Book 3: Plot Twist (Lindy and Meric's Story) Book 4: Badge Bunny (Brynne and Chris's Story) Book 5: Wedding War (Hannah and Jason's Story) Book 6: Stage Mom (Larissa and Mateo's Story) Book 7: Shark Bite (Megan and Shark's Story)

Category : Domestic fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 519

Book Description
The summer Aldous Bohm turns nine, his parents move to the woods near Snoqualmie ,Washington, "to reinvent the American family." The Bohm's are working class hippies in post-Vietnam America. Their makeshift pastoral takes shape in a haze of pot smoke and good intentions and ultimately births a vortex of personal insecurity and romanticism taking the family deeper into the woods to destroy them. Aldous oversees these tragedies, recalled a decade later, after he has left Snoqualmie to join the military in the buildup to the first Gulf War. This novel conjoins the dead end narrative of American masculinity with the Romantic ideal of nature to suggest an ambivalent way forward, a path out of these woods.
