Category : Fiction

Book Description
Jane da Silva knows a Cole Porter tune and a silky voice will only carry you so far through the urbane cabarets of Europe. So when the young widow's "eccentric" Uncle Harold dies, she jets back to the States to claim the fortune she dearly needs to ransom her Visa card. Unfortunately, Jane finds her inheritance conditional and her situation critical. It seems Uncle Harold and his old-codger cronies are part of a secret society dedicated to aiding and abetting offbeat lost causes, and Jane must carry on her uncle's "work" if she expects to see anything resembling a windfall. But just how far will the chic expatriate go when her "hopeless case" forces her to mingle with a sleaze-ball lawyer, a scheming psychiatrist, a sinister New Age cult, a stone-cold corpse -- and a ruthless murderer?

Just Add Water

Just Add Water PDF Author: JesuMarie
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1491775025
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 95

Book Description
Just Add Water: A Memoir tells the story of an Italian American woman growing up in the Catholic Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. JesuMarie presents her recollections, framing them with a list of ingredients for Zuppa Maritata, a flavorful Italian soup. One simply adds water to the ingredients to bring the soup to life. In a similar way, JesuMarie finds that adding water, symbolizing a rich and resilient spirituality flowing from the lessons she learned from nuns in grade school, makes the ingredients of her life come together. Just as recipes bring the tastes of regional palettes to life through the choice of specific ingredients, Just Add Water brings the author’s childhood to life by immersing itself in her history’s specific details. She recalls at one point, “I transformed into the Flash, running very fast out the back door, under and through the laundry, pulling some of it down to the cement ground as I ran with superhuman speed. I looked back on the rest of the laundry swinging in the warm breeze as I made my escape around to the convent with the nuns. I could hear the Italian Madman cursing and screaming all our family’s dirty laundry out loud for all the neighbors to hear.” Just Add Water: A Memoir does not shy away from the uncomfortable details of the author’s life, but rather, it immerses them in the waters of spiritual insight, transforming them into a hearty soup.

The Bell Jar

The Bell Jar PDF Author: Sylvia Plath
Publisher: Good Press
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 227

Book Description
Esther Greenwood, a young woman from the suburbs of Boston, gains a summer internship at a prominent magazine in New York City, under editor Jay Cee; however, Esther is neither stimulated nor excited by either the big city or the glamorous culture and lifestyle that girls her age are expected to idolize and emulate. She instead finds her experience to be frightening and disorienting. From hereafter her mental state keeps deteriorating until she starts feeling helpless as if being kept inside a glass bell jar! The Bell Jar is the only novel written by the American writer and poet Sylvia Plath. Originally published under the pseudonym "Victoria Lucas" in 1963, the novel is semi-autobiographical, with the names of places and people changed. The book is often regarded as a roman à clef because the protagonist's descent into mental illness parallels Plath's own experiences with what may have been clinical depression or bipolar II disorder. Plath died by suicide a month after its first UK publication. The novel was published under Plath's name for the first time in 1967 and was not published in the United States until 1971, in accordance with the wishes of both Plath's husband, Ted Hughes, and her mother.

Playing with the Past

Playing with the Past PDF Author: Matthew Wilhelm Kapell
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1623568242
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 493

Book Description
Game Studies is a rapidly growing area of contemporary scholarship, yet volumes in the area have tended to focus on more general issues. With Playing with the Past, game studies is taken to the next level by offering a specific and detailed analysis of one area of digital game play -- the representation of history. The collection focuses on the ways in which gamers engage with, play with, recreate, subvert, reverse and direct the historical past, and what effect this has on the ways in which we go about constructing the present or imagining a future. What can World War Two strategy games teach us about the reality of this complex and multifaceted period? Do the possibilities of playing with the past change the way we understand history? If we embody a colonialist's perspective to conquer 'primitive' tribes in Colonization, does this privilege a distinct way of viewing history as benevolent intervention over imperialist expansion? The fusion of these two fields allows the editors to pose new questions about the ways in which gamers interact with their game worlds. Drawing these threads together, the collection concludes by asking whether digital games - which represent history or historical change - alter the way we, today, understand history itself.

Who Me? Worthwhile? Yes, You!

Who Me? Worthwhile? Yes, You! PDF Author: Glenda L. Hunter
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1498274374
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 44

Book Description
Who Me? Worthwhile? Yes, You! is a workbook to help you evaluate where you stand with yourself. As an abused individual, I feel it necessary to change the way one sees who one is. Many people have a low self-image. We think we are who others say we are, when in fact their view of us might be very wrong. It is easy to see good qualities and value in other people, but when it comes to who we are, the tables can get turned. Our vision is sometimes colored by what hides deep inside. This workbook is designed to help us take a deep look into what makes us the people we are. Emotions play a part in our make-up; therefore, in discussing those, we can better evaluate the true nature of our total being. Looking at Scripture helps us to revaluate who we are in God. It gives us the hope and help needed to better our lives. The Bible also has many quotes and stories that are relevant today. It applies to every emotion we have and lets us know God gave us these feelings. God is there in all that we go through. He can, will, and does help us live through events thought to be too tough to handle. He changes us in ways we only thought we could dream would happen. He gives us value beyond measure. He is the one who ultimately measures our worth.
