Stories are everywhere; some, we know. But most go unnoticed. While walking down a beach, visiting a hospital, searching for our favorite author in a bookstore, relaxing in a hotel or waiting for our train at a railway station. We encounter people who are either creating a story in these places or reminding us of one of our own. These eleven urban folktales have captured the hopes, dreams, and experiences of people of an imaginary town called Faujpur. Faujpur will speak with you through these eleven folktales and ask you about the tales from your town. This collection will bring you close to your city and might give you a different perspective to look for more interesting stories on an otherwise seemingly mundane day.

Jihad and Dawah

Jihad and Dawah PDF Author: Samina Yasmeen
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 1849049750
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 335

Book Description
This book provides a detailed account of the emergence and metamorphoses of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and its political arm, Jamat ud Dawah, since the early 1990s. Linking the group's narratives to the process of Islamization in Pakistan and divergent views on the country's Islamic identity, it is the first systematic analysis of how the organization, globally reviled as the perpetrator of the 2008 Mumbai Bombings, has developed its conception of da'wah (proselytizing) and jihad in response to regional and global developments. Samina Yasmeen makes extensive use of Urdu materials (pamphlets, books, ephemera) by Markaz Da'wah wal Irshad, the parent organization of LeT, to examine the 'insider's vision' of the dominant threats to Pakistan and the Muslim ummah, as well as strategies for countering these threats. She argues that while adopting an oppositional narrative vis-à-vis India and the West, LeT has increasingly turned its attention to da'wah narratives within Pakistan engaging with broader spectrums of society. Women have increasingly been assigned significant agency in this narrative, and JuD's activism in education and social welfare has helped it acquire social capital. This, in turn, prompts a re-imagining of the movement's relationship with the Pakistani military.

Book Description
Here you will find gods who make the three worlds tremble and lightning swing wildly across the firmament, shape-shifting asuras living in enchanted forests, wandering rishis with formidable magical powers, bewitching apsaras gliding through heavenly palaces and heroes so tall they touch the skies. Myths and folktales have nourished the cultural and spiritual heritage of India since the dawn of creation. They not only accentuate the splendour of the country's diverse cultures-Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Islamic, Christian, Sikh, Parsi, and tribal-but, collectively, they also blend to shape our nation's psyche. Many of them are familiar to us from our own childhoods. Those that are new serve to remind us of the extraordinary complexity of India's storytelling tradition. Sometimes these tales are archetypal, and sometimes they defy categorization. Sometimes they affirm our core values and, at other times, they make us question the motives that drive us. But what is always true about them, no matter how fantastical or creative the forms they take, is the rare insight they give us into the lives we live. They teach us about kinship, desire, greed, conflict, friendship, treachery, compassion, arrogance, persecution, empowerment, secrecy, romance, suffering, courage, challenges, wisdom, sexuality, and spirituality-and innumerable other things we might expect to experience in the course of our journey through life.
