Flat Rock of the Old Time

Flat Rock of the Old Time PDF Author: Robert B. Cuthbert
Publisher: Univ of South Carolina Press
ISBN: 1611176476
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 480

Book Description
A documentary history of a settlement adopted by Lowcountry gentry escaping the heat of weather and war The intoxicating "champagne air" of Flat Rock, North Carolina, captivated residents of lowcountry South Carolina in the nineteenth century because it offered them respite from the sickly, semitropical coastal climate. In Flat Rock of the Old Time, editor Robert B. Cuthbert has mined the collections of the South Carolina Historical Society to publish a documentary history of the place and its people. While many visitors came and went, others chose to become permanent residents. Among the Flat Rock settlers were some of the most distinguished South Carolina gentry: Blakes, Rutledges, Hugers, and Middletons. They established the Episcopal parish church of St. John in the Wilderness Church, where many of them are buried. They also supported a local economy that helped provide livelihoods to native residents who supplied them with goods and services. Visiting each other daily, they swapped news and gossip, sharing their joys and burdens. Lowcountry families refugeed to Flat Rock during the Civil War, thereby escaping the devastation of the coast but not the revolutionary consequences of the war, such as emancipation, occupation, and economic collapse. And through it all they wrote letters. Some refugee-residents sent off missives every day, describing the delicious weather, the activities of their neighbors, and the entwining relationships of family, faith, business, and recreation that sustained Flat Rock. The century chronicled in Flat Rock of the Old Times is viewed with a combination of nostalgia and clear-sightedness, not only by Cuthbert but also by his correspondents. Guided by the editor's copious introduction, annotations, and textual apparatus, readers experience the conjunction of people and place that was Flat Rock.

Body Landscape Journals

Body Landscape Journals PDF Author: Margaret Somerville
Publisher: Spinifex Press
ISBN: 9781875559879
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 252

Book Description
Reading this book is like falling through a faultline, as we respond to poesis, both as poetry and as thought creation. Margaret Somerville attended the 1984 Pine Gap Women's Peace Camp where urban women and Aboriginal women demonstrated against military bases. As she moved through the landscape of this and other very different places, she recorded her interactions: with Aboriginal women in the desert in the mountains and at home, and with white women in the tropics and at home. It is a thoughtful challenge of all that we think. She concludes with reflections on the architecture of love.

The Interview

The Interview PDF Author: Rupert Schmitt
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 0595526748
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 150

Book Description
Rupert Schmitt has been a teacher and an underground laborer. A full time writer and performance poet he loves water and lives in the Sonoran desert. As a youth while walking a breakwater with Black Mountain poet Charles Olson, ignoring the imposing BMC icon, Rupert scratched the back of a huge angler fish. He climbed Douglas-firs and big leaf maples with ropes and a chain saw and became an expert in wetlands, Millipedes and toxics. After a brief workshop with Charles Stafford, Stafford said Good Luck. Rupert moved away looking at him. Stafford kept looking at Rupert like a friend at the station to a friend on a departing train. Rupert Schmitt's poetry interviews cats. Neighs with horses. Is afraid to confront mountains. Confronts God. Tackles Buddhism. Has a grandmother who smells. Is reverent to nature. Irreverent to leaders. Is passionate, eccentric and compassionate. He respects his teachers who have included a master wood carver, a master oil painter, and master poets. His poetry, easy to read and understand, is what it is. He has had retreats with Malodoma Somé, an African Shaman, Michael Meade a master story teller-drummer, Luis Rodriguez a former East Los Angeles Gang member and Geshe Ngawang Gedung his Tibetan Buddhist teacher who gave him the name of Yeshe. Without his teachers he would be nothing yet he cannot pin down what he learned.
