Book Description
Excerpt from First Year in French This book is intended for the use of children. In writing it, the author has aimed to ally two contending systems of teaching languages, one of which is known as the Natural or Conversational Method, the other as the Translation Method, with the regular teaching of grammar. It may be used as follows: - The first ten lessons are object lessons, the vocabularies of which contain only names of objects found under the eyes of children, in any schoolroom, or easily at hand. These vocabularies are generally divided into several parts, each of which contains words or model sentences, and corresponds to one of the exercises that follow. The teacher, taking each part of the vocabulary separately, and making or asking the children to make suitable movements, first speaks alone, then makes the children repeat, and writes on the blackboard what has just been said. Finally, when he has made everything in that part of the vocabulary clear for his pupils, he begins a conversation with them, and multiplies his questions until all have answered satisfactorily. Book Description
Excerpt from First Year French For Young Beginners It is hoped that the Exercises appended to each Lesson will provide ample drill; no retranslation exercises have been given; frequent dictations from the readings, and later, viva-voce te translations of the text from the teacher's English appear more suitable for very young children. To every reading have been appended a few lines for com mittal to memory: they are always illustrative either of the grammar or of the pronunciation drill of the lesson. It remains to be said that the attempt to deal with grammar and pronunciation on parallel lines has necessarily resulted in some want of logical sequence with regard both to the one and to the other; the compromise arrived at is largely experimental, and the writer will welcome both criticism and suggestions for improvements. French Life

French Life PDF Author: Philip Schuyler Allen

ISBN: 9781332380466
Category : Fiction

Pages : 244

Book Description
Excerpt from French Life: A Cultural Reader For The First Year It goes without saying that the vocabulary of words necessary to describe so many-sided a life, while not noticeably large, is yet not a small one. Nor have any especial pains been taken to restrict artificially the extent of the vocabulary. I am impatient of any elementary French book whose sole aim is to restrict the number of words used in it. Such a book is certain to be noteworthy, not for what it teaches, but for what it deliberately fails to teach. And surely, the more expressions the student can be brought to learn and retain, the better for him! French Life employs a threefold method for fastening its expressions in the reader's mind. First, it presents its material in the form of concise categories. What one expects to come next, actually does come. The whole context of each chapter is interrelated, is closely bound together. Second, the progression from one chapter of the book to another is a natural one. Much care has been taken to avoid whimsical and irrelative digression in theme and treatment. As much as possible each division of the book grows out of the one preceding it. Third, in addition to the constantly applied principle of association of facts, their iteration is a prominent feature of French Life. Key-words and important idiomatic phrases are repeated over and over again - not on the same page always, but in the chapters which follow the first mention of such words and phrases. Woodenness of expression is thus avoided, at the same time that the student has sufficient opportunity to drill upon what is essential. Book Description
Excerpt from First Book in French IN preparing this book, particular attention has been paid to the needs of those beginning the study of a foreign language. The arrangement of the book is designed to combine the inductive and deductive methods of teaching French, and, as far as possible, to eliminate the disadvantages of each. The French vocabulary is based on the reading selection and is presented, not by artificial lists, but according to the natural principle of association of ideas. From the outset, connected passage: for reading are given; they include a broad range of everyday, conversational topics, and many incidental allusions to historical and literary subjects that allow fur ther expansion in the oral work of the classroom. The book readily lends itself to the needs of classes in which the advantages of the direct method are combined with those of the grammatical method. Book Description
Excerpt from Second Year In French The end aimed at by every student of a modern language should be not only to read it, but also to speak and write it correctly. As the knowledge of a language evidently consists of these three essential acquirements, to neglect one of them is a mistake that no serious argument can justify. Beginners French (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Victor Emmanuel Francois

Pages : 310

Book Description
Excerpt from Beginners French The old method of teaching modern languages was training only the eye. The new methods aim to train the ear, the tongue and the eye. The author has tried to bring together a set of exercises giving to each of these organs a fair field of activity. Up-to-date teachers are anxious to use French in their classes as soon as possible, but very few elementary books, if any, help them to carry out their cherished ambition. It is the aim of the present volume to enable such masters, however inexperienced they may be, to make use of the conversational method from the very start. A glance through the book will suffice to understand its arrangement. It is simple and methodical. Rules. - The book contains all grammar rules that first and second-year high school students or first-year college students are expected to be familiar with. Every lesson begins with a few general rules, the examples coming first for obvious reasons. It was decided to write the rules in English for the convenience of the learner. However, as early as possible and especially when reviewing, the teacher is advised to translate them into easy French and to require his pupils to recite them in the same form. May it also be suggested here that teachers of languages should make a more general use of the Socratic or inductive method?
