The First Maryland Cavalry, C.S.A. was formed in May 1862 of veterans of the Howard County, Maryland Dragoons and the First Virginia Cavalry. The Marylanders saw action at Brandy Station, Gettysburg, Winchester and Cedar Creek. The participated in Gen. Jubal Early's raid on Washington, aided in Gen. John McCausland's burning of Chambersburg, and acted as rear guard for Lee's Army of Northern Virginia on the way to Appomattox. Davis's Battalion of Maryland Cavalry was organized in 1863. The men spent the winter scouting and on outpost duty in the Shenandoah Valley, then saw action at New Market, Piedmont, Buford's Gap and Winchester. Davis was wounded and captured during the last battle, and the remnants of his unit then served with the First and Second Maryland Cavalry until the end of the way. The Second Maryland Cavalry, C.S.A., was organized by Harry W. Gilmor of Baltimore in May 1863. The unit served in the Shenandoah Valley and led Early's advance on Washington. When Gilmor was seirously wounded and later captured, his men continued to serve the Confederacy as scouts.--Back cover.

The First Maryland Infantry was formed from Marylanders who chose to cast their lot with the Confederacy against a Union government that had invaded their state and established martial law, forcing those who disagreed with the invasion of the South to join the Confederates or to submit to what they considered as tyranny. Organized at Harpers Ferry, they fought in the first battle of the war at Bull Run, and distinguished themselves for their valor. The Marylanders fought in the Shenandoah Valley under Jackson, bringing new honors to their fame. During the Seven Day Campaign they made an outstanding charge across open fields to help break the Union lines at Gaines's Mill. Disbanded in 1862, they quickly reorganized and gathered new recruits to become the Second Maryland Infantry. These gallant Marylanders defended the Shenandoah Valley during the winter of 1862-63, and then fought in the battle of Winchester in 1863. Joining Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, they charged up Culp's Hill on July 2-3, losing half their number. In june, 1864, the Marylanders charged without orders and closed a gap in the Confederate lines at Cold Harbor. Defending Petersburg, they were in several counterattacks to recover the Weldon Railroad. During the winter of 1864-65 the Marylanders were constantly called on for picket duty, while others around them deserted. A short but colorful memoir by a sergeant in the 2nd Texas regiment, which served with distinction in the Western Theatre of the Civil War. Sergeant Smith volunteered in the first months of the outbreak of the Civil War, but his first real taste of the conflict came as part of the Army of the Mississippi under General Albert Sidney Johnson at Shiloh. The author recounts the confused nature of the fighting around the Hornet’s Nest and the sorrow of the repulse but above all the deep sense of loss at the death of their Confederate leader. After duties around the outskirts of Vicksburg, Smith and his comrades were among the Confederate soldiers that were penned up there by the Union forces under General Grant. Despite a fierce resistance the Confederate soldiers of Vicksburg were forced to surrender and the troops were paroled. Eventually exchanged, Smith spent the rest of the war in the garrison of Galveston under General Magruder before settling in San Marcos Texas.

On 3 February 1941, the First Maryland Infantry Regiment, Maryland Army National Guard, was inducted into federal service as the 115th Infantry Regiment and sent to join the 29th Infantry Division. They arrived in England on 11 October 1942, and then were attached to the 1st Infantry Division in preparation for the D-Day invasion. They moved with the 1st Infantry Division from 2 June 1944, and remained with 1st Infantry Division until 7 June 1944, when they returned to the 29th Infantry Division for further operations. Their participation in the Normandy Campaign continued until it was over on 24 July 1944. They immediately moved into the Northern France Campaign on 25 July 1944, which continued until it was over on 14 September 1944. During this period the 115th Infantry Regiment was engaged in one of the war's forgotten chapters, "The Battle of Brest". The Battle for Brest was one of the fiercest battles fought during Operation Cobra, the Allied breakout of Normandy which began on 27 July 1944, during the Battle of Normandy during World War II. The 115th Infantry then started participation in the Rhineland Campaign on 15 September 1944, whereupon the 115th Infantry crossed from France to Belgium and the Netherlands both on 27 September 1944, and entered Germany on 30 September 1944.
