Emotion in the Human Face

Emotion in the Human Face PDF Author: Paul Ekman
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483147630
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 204

Book Description
Emotion in the Human Face: Guidelines for Research and an Integration of Findings reviews research findings about the link between the face and emotion and provides some guidelines for study of this complicated but intriguing phenomenon. Some of the conceptual ambiguities that have hindered research and the methodological decisions that must be made in planning research on the face and emotion are discussed. How past investigators handled these matters is presented critically, and a set of standards is offered. This book is comprised of 21 chapters and begins with an overview of questions about how the face provides information about emotion, with emphasis on evidence based on scientific research (largely in psychology). The reader is then introduced to conceptual ambiguities and methodological decisions related to research on the face-emotion connection (including sampling), along with some important research findings. In particular, emotion categories and dimensions that observers can judge on the basis of facial behavior are analyzed, and whether such judgments can be accurate. The similarities and differences in facial behavior across cultures are also considered, along with the relative contribution of facial behavior and contextual information to the judgment of emotion. This monograph is intended primarily for students of psychology, anthropology, ethology, sociology, and biology, as well as those planning or already conducting research on the face.

Finding Grace

Finding Grace PDF Author: Lynn Blodgett
Publisher: Earth Aware Editions
ISBN: 9781601091055
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Strength. Dignity. Humanity. Grace. These qualities are not commonly associated with America's homeless, so often overlooked or avoided on our city streets. Yet they are precisely the qualities that illuminate the faces pictured in this astonishing volume. These are our sisters and brothers, and this collection of portraits honors them. Photographer Lynn Blodgett is the head of the nation's largest provider of computer-based services to state and local governments. While traveling for work, Blodgett began compiling a photographic journal of the homeless people he encountered in each of the cities he visited. He discovered the grace and dignity in his subjects. He listened to their stories. And in response he has created a compelling social document, at once gorgeous and simple. Finding Grace: The Face of America's Homeless is Lynn Blodgett's elegant statement on humanity. Through his lens we are reminded of the inspiration that can be found in the gravest of circumstances, and that can be the source of change. Proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit the Finding Grace Homeless Initiative in its efforts to raise awareness for homeless issues across the country.

Face-It Finding Answers Concerning Every Issue Today PDF Author: Dr. Ava S. Harvey Sr.
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 1973657368
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 89

Book Description
The Black church has traditionally served as the unifying agent within the Black community. It was the locus of formation regarding morality training, spiritual awareness and social activism. It provided a safe space for African Americans to heal from the evil wounds of slavery, bigotry, Jim Crow, discrimination and racism. In recent years the role and place of the Black church in the life of African American people has begun to diminish. In no specific gender is this reality seen more clearly than in the absence of Black men from church pews. Across denominational lines, irrespective of geographical locations, backgrounds, and class, Black men are exiting the Black church at a rate that is both shocking and alarming. The key to restoring the Black church lies within the heart and hands of the Black man. This book seeks to offer a new strategy to reach, resource, and restore the Black man to his God-given position of prominence by facing the issues that have marred his identity.

Finding Faith in the Face of Doubt

Finding Faith in the Face of Doubt PDF Author: Joseph S. Willis
Publisher: Quest Books
ISBN: 0835630986
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 170

Book Description
Many Americans say they are uncertain about their religious beliefs, although they continue to attend Christian and other churches. Interdenominational minister Willis presents this beautifully written book to help questioners maintain their integrity while relating to the vast Mystery that informs the universe beyond all understanding. "We know we don't know," Willis says, "and yet we all (even atheists) must stand on assumptions that help us lead good lives." To explore these assumptions, he discusses different ways of thinking about God, scientific and mythical views, the sources of good and evil, and the need for both freedom and commitment. He assures us we can all think reasonably about Ultimate Reality and find a faith that fits. The book grew from theology classes Willis taught in Unitarian churches and universities and from conversations with discontented members of other discussion groups. His clear and engaging prose is full of lively exchanges with his students. Frequent references to the best contemporary theologians (Bishop Spong, for example) and to philosophers, physicists, mythologists, and Bible experts provide an inspiring resource for those who long to resolve the conflict between faith and reason, doubt and belief.
