This publication sets out the results of a co-ordinated research project, jointly conducted by the IAEA, the FAO and the International Union of Radiologists, to assess the transfer of radionuclides from soils to plants and crops in temperate, tropical and sub-tropical ecosystems so as to identify systems in which transfer factors deviate substantially from average. The overall objectives of the project are to: improve radiological assessment models to facilitate better planning for emergency response and long-term agricultural countermeasures, particularly in developing countries, through the development of generic data and data relevant to local conditions; and to develop precise data on environmental parameters to be used when setting limits for authorised discharges from nuclear installations.
