Final Matters

Final Matters PDF Author: Szilárd Borbély
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691183872
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 199

Book Description
An award-winning translator presents selections from the haunting final volumes of a leading voice in contemporary Hungarian poetry Szilárd Borbély, one of the most celebrated writers to emerge from post-Communist Hungary, received numerous literary awards in his native country. In this volume, acclaimed translator Ottilie Mulzet reveals the full range and force of Borbély’s verse by bringing together generous selections from his last two books, Final Matters and To the Body. The original Hungarian text is set on pages facing the English translations, and the book also features an afterword by Mulzet that places the poems in literary, historical, and biographical context. Restless, curious, learned, and alert, Borbély weaves into his work an unlikely mix of Hungarian folk songs, Christian and Jewish hymns, classical myths, police reports, and unsettling accounts of abortions. In her afterword, Mulzet calls this collection “a blasphemous and fragmentary prayer book ... that challenges us to rethink the boundaries of victimhood, culpability, and our own religious and cultural definitions.”

Your End of Life Matters

Your End of Life Matters PDF Author: Anne Finkelman Ziff
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1538110229
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 185

Book Description
Your End of Life Matters is offered at a time when people are starting to talk more about end-of-life matters. Based on the author’s own experiences and those of others she’s worked with, the book conveys the value of talking about last wishes long before the end is imminent. With the primary emphasis on how to create a successful end-of-life communication of your own, this book weaves stories, text, writing prompts, humor, and exercises into 12 chapters that include answers to key questions including the who? why?, what?, how?, where?, and when? of a potential conversation. She covers Legacy Documents and other issues that might arise when planning for those final days. Ziff has written a “how-to” communication book for readers of all ages, addressing the need, and recommending methods, to do what her parents did, and what she eventually did as well: To communicate, with someone you know you can trust, what the end-of-life matters are that you will want known both before, and when the time (of your death) comes. Ziff has been on both sides of this vital conversation, first as a Listener, and, more recently, as its Initiator, and she advocates the value of both roles. “Let me tell you,” she admits candidly, “the planning ahead is pretty challenging and time-consuming—cataloging my office data, tax and medical information, photos and writings, to say nothing of books, and of clothing I had saved but not used in decades. But the relief—being able to know the talk was accomplished successfully—that’s remarkable! I’m free now to actively get on exploring my bucket list and living my life!”

Berlin-Hamlet

Berlin-Hamlet PDF Author: Szilárd Borbély
Publisher: New York Review of Books
ISBN: 1681370557
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 113

Book Description
Shortlisted for the 2017 National Translation Award in Poetry and the 2017 Best Translated Book Award in Poetry Before his tragic death, Szilárd Borbély had gained a name as one of Europe's most searching new poets. Berlin-Hamlet—one of his major works—evokes a stroll through the phantasmagoric shopping arcades described in Walter Benjamin’s Arcades Project, but instead of the delirious image fragments of nineteenth-century European culture, we pass by disembodied scraps of written text, remnants as ghostly as their authors: primarily Franz Kafka but also Benjamin himself or the Hungarian poets Attila József or Erno Szép. Paraphrases and reworked quotations, drawing upon the vanished prewar legacy, particularly its German Jewish aspects, appear in sharp juxtaposition with images of post-1989 Berlin frantically rebuilding itself in the wake of German reunification.
