The Age of Beloveds offers a rich introduction to early modern Ottoman culture through a study of its beautiful lyric love poetry. At the same time, it suggests provocative cross-cultural parallels in the sociology and spirituality of love in Europe—from Istanbul to London—during the long sixteenth century. Walter G. Andrews and Mehmet Kalpakli provide a generous sampling of translations of Ottoman poems, many of which have never appeared in English, along with informative and inspired close readings. The authors explain that the flourishing of Ottoman power and culture during the “Turkish Renaissance” manifested itself, to some degree, as an “age of beloveds,” in which young men became the focal points for the desire and attention of powerful officeholders and artists as well as the inspiration for a rich literature of love. The authors show that the “age of beloveds” was not just an Ottoman, eastern European, or Islamic phenomenon. It extended into western Europe as well, pervading the cultures of Venice, Florence, Rome, and London during the same period. Andrews and Kalpakli contend that in an age dominated by absolute rulers and troubled by war, cultural change, and religious upheaval, the attachments of dependent courtiers and the longings of anxious commoners aroused an intense interest in love and the beloved. The Age of Beloveds reveals new commonalities in the cultural history of two worlds long seen as radically different.

Zahar* The sixty-fifth birthday of Walter Gautschi provided an opportune moment for an international symposium in his honor, to recognize his many contributions to mathematics and computer sciences. Conceived by John Rice and sponsored by Purdue University, the conference took place in West Lafayette from December 2 to 5, 1993, and was organized around the four main themes representing Professor Gautschi's principal research interests: Approximation, Orthogonal Polynomials, Quadrature and Special Functions. Thirty-eight speakers - colleagues, co-authors, research collaborators or doctoral students of Professor Gautschi - were invited to present articles at the conference, their lectures providing an approximately equal representation of the four disciplines. Five invited speakers, Germund Dahlquist, Philip Davis, Luigi Gatteschi, Werner Rheinboldt and Stephan Ruscheweyh, were unable to present their talks because of illness or other commitments, although Professors Dahlquist, Gatteschi and Ruscheweyh subsequently contributed arti cles to these proceedings. Thus, the final program contained thirty-three technical lectures, ten of which were plenary sessions. Approximately eighty scientists attended the conference, and for some ses sions - in particular, Walter's presentation of his entertaining and informative Reflections and Recollections - that number was complemented by many visitors and friends, as well as the family of the honoree. A surprise visit by Paul Erdos provided one of the highlights of the conference week. The ambiance at the sym posium was extremely collegial, due no doubt to the common academic interests and the personal friendships shared by the participants.

In The Dragoman Renaissance, E. Natalie Rothman traces how Istanbul-based diplomatic translator-interpreters, known as the dragomans, systematically engaged Ottoman elites in the study of the Ottoman Empire—eventually coalescing in the discipline of Orientalism—throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Rothman challenges Eurocentric assumptions still pervasive in Renaissance studies by showing the centrality of Ottoman imperial culture to the articulation of European knowledge about the Ottomans. To do so, she draws on a dazzling array of new material from a variety of archives. By studying the sustained interactions between dragomans and Ottoman courtiers in this period, Rothman disrupts common ideas about a singular moment of "cultural encounter," as well as about a "docile" and "static" Orient, simply acted upon by extraneous imperial powers. The Dragoman Renaissance creatively uncovers how dragomans mediated Ottoman ethno-linguistic, political, and religious categories to European diplomats and scholars. Further, it shows how dragomans did not simply circulate fixed knowledge.
