Excerpt from Wave Propagation Across Ion Cyclotron Resonance Harmonic Layers X-mode is independent of the direction of incidence, (ii) the reflected modecoupling coefficients are the same in the cases of fast mode and the slow mode incidences, and (iii) the transmitted mode conversion coefficients are the same in the cases of fast and slow mode incidences. The validity of these relations does not depend explicitly either on parallel index of te fraction or on the equilibrium distribution function. The method of proof of Chiu and Mau' which leads to similar reciprocity relations cannot be direct ly applied in our case as it exploits the symmetry of the full system which may not be retained in the approximate equations derived for the resonance layer. Two other results found in the special case of zero parallel refrac tive index are that the reflection coefficient is zero for a high field side incident fast mode, and that the transmission coefficient for this mode is the same as that predicted by geometrical optics. We also show that these results hold generally for second harmonic resonance. We suspect the re sults are true for all harmonics. And the proof would be an extension of the theorem in the Appendix.
