Fast Spectrum Reactors

Fast Spectrum Reactors PDF Author: Alan E. Waltar
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1441995722
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 717

Book Description
This book is a complete update of the classic 1981 FAST BREEDER REACTORS textbook authored by Alan E. Waltar and Albert B. Reynolds, which , along with the Russian translation, served as a major reference book for fast reactors systems. Major updates include transmutation physics (a key technology to substantially ameliorate issues associated with the storage of high-level nuclear waste ), advances in fuels and materials technology (including metal fuels and cladding materials capable of high-temperature and high burnup), and new approaches to reactor safety (including passive safety technology), New chapters on gas-cooled and lead-cooled fast spectrum reactors are also included. Key international experts contributing to the text include Chaim Braun, (Stanford University) Ronald Omberg, (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Massimo Salvatores (CEA, France), Baldev Raj, (Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research, India) , John Sackett (Argonne National Laboratory), Kevan Weaver, (TerraPower Corporation) ,James Seinicki(Argonne National Laboratory). Russell Stachowski (General Electric), Toshikazu Takeda (University of Fukui, Japan), and Yoshitaka Chikazawa (Japan Atomic Energy Agency).

Management of Nuclear Power Plant Projects

Management of Nuclear Power Plant Projects PDF Author: IAEA
Publisher: International Atomic Energy Agency
ISBN: 9201055226
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 221

Book Description
Member States intending to introduce a nuclear power programme will need to pass through several phases during the implementation. Experience shows that careful planning of the objectives, roles, responsibilities, interfaces and tasks to be carried out in different phases of a nuclear project is important for success. This publication presents a harmonized approach that may be used to structure the owner/operator management system and establish and manage nuclear projects and their development activities irrespective of the adopted approach. It has been developed from shared management practices and consolidated experiences provided by nuclear project management specialists through a series of workshops and working groups organized by the IAEA. The resultant publication presents a useful framework for the management of nuclear projects from initiation to closeout and captures international best practices.

Nuclear Back-end and Transmutation Technology for Waste Disposal

Nuclear Back-end and Transmutation Technology for Waste Disposal PDF Author: Ken Nakajima
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 4431551115
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 331

Book Description
This book covers essential aspects of transmutation technologies, highlighting especially the advances in Japan. The accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) has caused us to focus attention on a large amount of spent nuclear fuels stored in NPPs. In addition, public anxiety regarding the treatment and disposal of high-level radioactive wastes that require long-term control is growing. The Japanese policy on the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle is still unpredictable in the aftermath of the accident. Therefore, research and development for enhancing the safety of various processes involved in nuclear energy production are being actively pursued worldwide. In particular, nuclear transmutation technology has been drawing significant attention after the accident. This publication is timely with the following highlights: 1) Development of accelerator-driven systems (ADSs), which is a brand-new reactor concept for transmutation of highly radioactive wastes; 2) Nuclear reactor systems from the point of view of the nuclear fuel cycle. How to reduce nuclear wastes or how to treat them including the debris from TEPCO’s Fukushima nuclear power stations is discussed; and 3) Environmental radioactivity, radioactive waste treatment and geological disposal policy. State-of-the-art technologies for overall back-end issues of the nuclear fuel cycle as well as the technologies of transmutation are presented here. The chapter authors are actively involved in the development of ADSs and transmutation-related technologies. The future of the back-end issues in Japan is very uncertain after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP and this book provides an opportunity for readers to consider the future direction of those issues.

Fast Reactor System Design

Fast Reactor System Design PDF Author: Naoto Kasahara
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9811028214
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 307

Book Description
This book describes the fast reactor (FR), a type of new reactor for nuclear plants, currently under research and development. The book targets young researchers and engineers who will be charged with commercializing this new type of reactor to lead to the development of new components and systems for improved plant reliability and economy. This volume also helps readers to understand the methods of integrating the power plant in its entirety, from the reactor core to all of the various systems and components, and teaches the way of thinking that forms the background of these methods. This background includes the various organizational and management issues that are encountered as projects move forward and will be explored in great detail based on actual design and construction experience with Japan’s prototype FR, Monju.
