Book Description
We have set up two collinear fast beam/laser excitation systems, one at the Argonne Dynamitron Accelerator (0.5 to 5.0 MeV beam energy) and another at a small electrostatic accelerator (20 to 130 keV). Our objective is to study fine structure, hyperfine structure and QED effects in ions of a few electrons. Initial projects underway include studies of multi-excited transitions in Li− and Li°, and transitions to high Rydberg states in H° and He°. We have simultaneously excited a sodium jet with a laser at the resonance wavelength (D1 or D2 lines) and a 1-MeV He/sup +/ beam to produce excitation to autoionizing Na and Na/sup +/ states. The Auger electron spectra are compared to spectra obtained without laser excitation, and indicate strong variations in final state populations. 17 references.

Book Description
The principal goal of this book is to provide state-of-the-art coverage of the non-relativistic three- and four-body theories at intermediate and high energy ion-atom and ion-molecule collisions. The focus is on the most frequently studied processes: electron capture, ionization, transfer excitation and transfer ionization. The content is suitable both for graduate students and experienced researchers. For these collisions, the literature has seen enormous renewal of activity in the development and applications of quantum-mechanical theories. This subject is of relevance in several branches of science and technology, like accelerator-based physics, the search for new sources of energy and high temperature fusion of light ions. Other important applications are in life sciences via medicine, where high-energy ion beams are used in radiotherapy for which a number of storage ring accelerators are in full operation, under construction or planned to be built worldwide. Therefore, it is necessary to review this field for its most recent advances with an emphasis on the prospects for multidisciplinary applications. This book is accompanied by Interdisciplinary Research on Particle Collisions and Quantitative Spectroscopy Volume 2 - Fast Collisions of Light Ions with Matter: Charge Exchange and Ionization.

Book Description
A new electron spectroscopy system has been developed for measuring electron emission from gas and solid targets induced by fast ion impact. This system uses an ultrahigh-vacuum compatible cylindrical deflector analyzer, designed and fabricated in the Department of Physics at East Carolina University, to measure electron yields as a function of electron energy and emission angle for fast ions interacting with materials. The new spectroscopy system was tested in a previously existing high-vacuum target chamber that has been installed on a new beam line in the ECU Accelerator Laboratory. In addition to the new analyzer, a new data acquisition and experimental control system, based on LabVIEW computer control software, was developed and tested using an existing cylindrical mirror analyzer. Data from this system was compared to previous results to confirm the functionality of the design. Subsequently, the new analyzer was installed in the high-vacuum target chamber and tested by measuring Auger electron emission from 2 MeV protons incident on an argon gas target and comparing to well-known emission spectra. Ultimately, the new electron spectroscopy system will be used for measuring electron yields from condensed phase targets in ultrahigh-vacuum conditions in future experiments.

Electron and Ion Spectroscopy of Solids

Electron and Ion Spectroscopy of Solids PDF Author: L. Fiermans
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468428179
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 485

Book Description
Surface physics and chemistry have in recent years become one of the most active fields in solid state research. A number of techniques have been developed, and both the experimental aspect and the correlated theory are evolving at an extremely fast rate. Electron and ion spectroscopy are of major importance in this development. In this volume, which contains edited and extended versions of eight sets of lectures given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Ghent, Belgium, from August 29 to September 9, 1977, a re view of the state of the art in these fields is given from both an experimental and a theoretical point of view. Electron emission techniques such as UPS (ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy), XPS (x-ray photoemission spectroscopy), and AES (Auger electron spectroscopy) constitute the major part of this volume, reflecting the fact that they continue to be the most widely applied surface techniques. Recent developments in the application of synchrotron radiation to angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy are extensively covered, from an experimental point of view by Prof. W. E. Spicer (Stanford University, U.S.A.) and from a theoretical point of view by Dr. A. Liebsch (Kernforschungsanlage Julich, Germany). Emphasis is put on the study of energy bands in layered structures, and on chemisorption on well-defined surfaces. Chemisorption and catalysis on metals is treated in detail by Prof. G. Ertl (Universitat Munchen, Germany). This chapter contains a review of the application of the different surface techniques to specific surface systems.

State-of-the-art Reviews on Energetic Ion-atom and Ion-molecule Collisions

State-of-the-art Reviews on Energetic Ion-atom and Ion-molecule Collisions PDF Author: Dževad Belkić
Publisher: World Scientific Publishing Company
ISBN: 9789811211607
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
"This book is based upon a part of the invited and contributing talks at the 25th International Symposium on Ion-Atom Collisions, ISIAC (biennial), held on July 23-25, 2017 in Palm Cove, Queensland, Australia. To aid the general reader, all the authors tried to present their chapters in the context of the development of the addressed particular themes and the underlying major ideas and intricacies. Some chapters contain new results that have not been previously published elsewhere. Whenever possible, the authors made their attempts to connect the basic research in atomic and molecular collision physics with some important applications in other branches of physics as well as across the physics borders. It is hoped that the material presented in this book will be interesting and useful to the beginners and specialists alike. The contents and expositions are deemed to be helpful to the beginners in assessing the potential overlap of some of the presented material with their own research themes and this might provide motivations for possible further upgrades. Likewise, specialists could take advantage of these reviews to see where the addressed themes were and where they are going, in order to acknowledge the fruits of the efforts made thus far and actively contribute to tailoring the directions of future research. Overall, this book is truly interdisciplinary. It judiciously combines experiments and theories within particle collision physics on atomic and molecular levels. It presents state-of-the-art fundamental research in this field. It addresses the possibilities for significant and versatile applications outside standard atomic and molecular collision physics ranging from astrophysics, surface as well as cluster physics/chemistry, hadron therapy in medicine and to the chemical industry. It is then, as Volume 2, fully in the spirit of the "Aims and Scope" of this book series by reference to its "Mission Statement"."-- Back cover.

Determination of Electronic and Atomic Structural Parameters During Fast Ion Transport

Determination of Electronic and Atomic Structural Parameters During Fast Ion Transport PDF Author: F. W. Lytl

Book Description
X-ray absorption spectroscopy was used to determine the valence state and local structure in a vanadium bronze and a tungsten bronze series of fast ion conducting materials. The structure parameters confirm previous x-ray diffraction results; however, the direct determination of valence state(s) is a unique result. X-ray methods appear to offer real advantages for in situ characterization. X-ray absorption spectroscopy is able to single out each different kind of element in a complex material because the core-level absorption edges are well separated in energy. The region near the absorption edge, x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) contains information on the valence state and local symmetry of the absorbing atom. The extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) above the absorption edge is caused by scattering of the ejected photoelectron and may be used to determine near neighbor structural parameters.
