It is the same Fal or Faw which is found in Falkirk, Falkland, and Fauside, and means speckled, hence Fala means speckled hill In some of the old charters it is designated lie Falla, lie, a corrup tion of the French article le, showing that the French influence was considerable at Court and in Law. The use of the article was meant to mark it ofl' from the smaller Falas that then existed in various parts of the country.
