Grassroots Unity in the Charismatic Renewal

Grassroots Unity in the Charismatic Renewal PDF Author: Connie Ho Yan Au
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1608995615
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 299

Book Description
This book explores the nature of grassroots unity in the British charismatic renewal in the 1970s and its significance to ecumenism. The study is based on the five international conferences of the Fountain Trust and focuses on two grassroots activities: worship in general and the celebration of the Eucharist in particular. Worship in this setting nurtured unity through charisms, but the Eucharist exposed the inadequacy of this grassroots unity because of doctrinal and ecclesiological differences. This book aims to suggest a way forward by searching for the complementarity of institution and charisms, and Christology and Pneumatology in a charismatic context. It argues that the two emphases of the charismatic renewal, charisms, and the Holy Spirit, complement the institutional commitments of the church and ecumenism. The concepts of Christus praesens and Spiriti praesens are considered intrinsic to the charisms, and thus Christology and Pneumatology should both be considered significant for ecumenism. The study finally discusses the complementarity of ecumenical institutions and the charismatic renewal, the convergence of ecumenical streams, and continuity in modern ecumenical history.

England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales

England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales PDF Author: Keith Robbins
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191544183
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 544

Book Description
Keith Robbins, building on his previous writing on the modern history of the interlocking but distinctive territories of the British Isles, takes a wide-ranging, innovative and challenging look at the twentieth-century history of the main bodies, at once national and universal, which have collectively constituted the Christian Church. The protracted search for elusive unity is emphasized. Particular beliefs, attitudes, policies and structures are located in their social and cultural contexts. Prominent individuals, clerical and lay, are scrutinized. Religion and politics intermingle, highlighting, for churches and states, fundamental questions of identity and allegiance, of public and private values, in a century of ideological conflict, violent confrontation (in Ireland), two world wars and protracted Cold War. The massive change experienced by the countries and people of the Isles since 1900 has encompassed shifting relationships between England, Ireland (and Northern Ireland), Scotland and Wales, the end of the British Empire, the emergence of a new Europe and, latterly, major immigration of adherents of Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism and other faiths from outside Europe: developments scarcely conceivable at the outset. Such a broad contextual perspective provides an essential background to understanding the puzzling ambiguities evident both in secularization and enduring Christian faith. Robbins provides a cogent and compelling overview of this turbulent century for the churches of the Isles.

Oliver Quick and the Quest for a Christian Metaphysic

Oliver Quick and the Quest for a Christian Metaphysic PDF Author: Alexander J. Hughes
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317085965
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 237

Book Description
Oliver Chase Quick (1885-1944) was one of the foremost and most widely read British theologians of his day. Oliver Quick and the Quest for a Christian Metaphysic presents the first major study of his work. Exploring Quick's understanding of the task of theology, his Christology, sacramental theology and doctrine of God, Hughes explains Quick’s attempt to restructure the idea of divine transcendence. Expanding the narrative of twentieth-century historical theology, this book draws conclusions about shifts in English theology in the last century, particularly the persistence and vitality of a philosophically oriented Anglican theology. Offering fresh insights into twentieth-century English theology and its leading figures, this book will also appeal to those with an interest in philosophical theology, systematic theology and Christian doctrine.

'Tell Us Our Names' is a timely book, beautifully written and understandable by all. Its particular challenge lies in the folk and fairy tales that provide the text. Here are the roots of both faith and reason -- and the direct way to dump excess baggage and discover new and better questions. Scripture, Oriental wisdom, ecumenical theology: all receive calm and imaginative treatment in Song's hands."" --Joseph McLelland, McGill University, Montreal In this volume Dr. Song offers us 'golden keys to open the stonegates of religion.' Gathering together intercultural insights from the experience of people in many countries, these parables and stories usher us into the presence of Mystery. The easy flow of storytelling, smoothly mixed with sensitive interpretation, makes this volume very readable. To those who believe that theology has to do only with ideas and concepts, this volume may come as a surprise and a joyful discovery."" --S. J. Samartha, former Director, Dialogue Programme, World Council of Churches, Geneva C. S. Song explores the folk tales of the world and depicts God's answer to the thrust for the redemption of the people with 'one stroke of an Asian brush.' Here, the culture, religion, history, and suffering of the Asian people is the medium of God's redemptive revelation. Certainly, by this work he has contributed another 'transposition' of the biblical message to Asia, a monumental accomplishment in the formation of Asian theology. Reading this Theology of Folk Tales is exciting and illuminative."" --Nam-Dong Suh, Director, Institute for Mission Education, Seoul, Korea C. S.
