This study explored and compared Generation Y (Gen Y) private and public college students to determine if differences exist in the factors that attract and ultimately motivate them to become active and engaged as volunteer and financial stakeholders in nonprofit organizations. This quantitative research was framed as a causal-comparative study that was designed to survey college students on three private and three public college venues located in the Midwest to determine if significant differences existed between the two groups in their motivations to become engaged in volunteerism and philanthropy with nonprofit organizations. The motivational variable constructs measured by this instrument were stakeholder alignment, belonging, engagement, disengagement, and philanthropy as they related to Gen Y college student nonprofit organization volunteerism behaviors using a purposive sampling technique. Based on the literature review, 14 hypotheses were tested using the Mann-Whitney U test. A second purpose of this research was to provide the operational leadership of small nonprofit organizations with insights on how to strategically position their respective organizations to successfully recruit, mentor, develop, and retain Gen Y volunteers.
