Space-Age Acronyms

Space-Age Acronyms PDF Author: Reta C. Moser
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461595940
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 486

Book Description
Acronym agglomeration is an affliction of the age, and there are acronym addicts who, in their weakness, find it impossible to resist them. More than once in recent months my peers have cautioned me about my apparent readiness to use not only acronyms, but abbreviations, foreign isms, codes, and other cryptic symbols rather than common, ordinary American words. Many among us, though, either have not received or have chosen to ignore such advice. As a consequence, what we write and speak is full of mystery and confusion. It is then for the reader and listener and for the writer and speaker that Reta C. Moser has compiled this guide. Its effective application to the art of communication is urged. Such use should help avoid many of the misunderstandings involving terminology which occur daily. Although such misunderstandings are certainly crucial in humanistic and social situations, they are often of immediate import and the trigger to disaster in scientific, technical, and political situations. Some 15,000 acronyms and 25,000 definitions are provided (a 50- and 47 -percent increase over the 1964 edition!), with due credit to Miss Moser's diligence in making the compilation and with the acknowledgment that the acronymical phenomenon is very much with us. This edition, like the first, is certain to be of value to writers, librarians, editors, and others who must identify and deal with acronyms.

PET Chemistry

PET Chemistry PDF Author: P.A. Schubiger

Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 348

Book Description
Personalized medicine employing patient-based tailor-made therapeutic drugs is taking over treatment paradigms in a variety of ?elds in oncology and the central nervous system. The success of such therapies is mainly dependent on ef?cacious therapeutic drugs and a selective imaging probe for identi?cation of potential responders as well as therapy monitoring for an early bene?t assessment. Molecular imaging (MI) is based on the selective and speci?c interaction of a molecular probe with a biological target which is visualized through nuclear, magnetic resonance, near infrared or other methods. Therefore it is the method of choice for patient selection and therapy monitoring as well as for speci?c e- point monitoring in modern drug development. PET (positron emitting tomography), a nuclear medical imaging modality, is ideally suited to produce three-dimensional images of various targets or processes. The rapidly increasing demand for highly selective probes for MI strongly pushes the development of new PET tracers and PET chemistry. ‘PET chemistry’ can be de?ned as the study of positron-emitting compounds regarding their synthesis, structure, composition, reactivity, nuclear properties and processes and their properties in natural and - natural environments. In practice PET chemistry is strongly in?uenced by the unique properties of the radioisotopes used (e. g. , half-life, che- cal reactivity, etc. ) and integrates scienti?c aspects of nuclear-, organic-, inorganic- and biochemistry.

Acknowledgements. - Valuable support for the Forum came from the Cancer Research Campaign, from Johnson Matthey & Co., and from U. K. pharmaceutical companies - Beechams, Glaxo, ICI and Smith, Kline & French. Moreover, some speakers came without full financial coverage. The choice of presentations was guided by Honorary Advisers including Drs. S.H. Curry (Chairman), J.A.F. de Silva, L.E. Martin, J. Chamberlain and G.G. Skellern. Drs. Jim Leppard and Joan Reid are thanked for Index drafting. As mentioned in the text, some Figs. have already appeared in journals, whose publishers (e.g. Elsevier, Dekker, Preston) are thanked: sources include Journal of Chroma- tography, Journal of Liquid Chromatography and Journal of Chromatographic Science, also (art. #E-S) a Wiley book edited by M. Trimble. Abbreviations.- In connection with HPLC ('LC' is a pet aver- sion) this Editor has often deplored the upstart use of 'ECD'-a term hallowed by its GC usage as in art. #F -2 later in the book. To connote 'electrochemical' the term 'EC' is now used, but 'ECD' is reserved for the electron-capture detector.Other abbreviations which, although well known, are generally defined in each article concerned include NP, normal-phase HPLC); RP, reverse(d)-phase; i.s., internal standard; MS, mass spectrometry (EI, electron-impact; CI, chemic, al-ionization); RIA, radioimmunoassay; UV, ultraviolet (usually absorbance)

NASA System Safety Handbook

NASA System Safety Handbook PDF Author: Homayoon Dezfuli
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781470116910
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 118

Book Description
System safety is the application of engineering and management principles, criteria, and techniques to optimize safety within the constraints of operational effectiveness, time, and cost throughout all phases of the system life cycle. System safety is to safety as systems engineering is to engineering. When performing appropriate analysis, the evaluation is performed holistically by tying into systems engineering practices and ensuring that system safety has an integrated system-level perspective. The NASA System Safety Handbook presents the overall framework for System Safety and provides the general concepts needed to implement the framework. The treatment addresses activities throughout the system life cycle to assure that the system meets safety performance requirements and is as safe as reasonably practicable. This handbook is intended for project management and engineering teams and for those with review and oversight responsibilities. It can be used both in a forward-thinking mode to promote the development of safe systems, and in a retrospective mode to determine whether desired safety objectives have been achieved. The topics covered in this volume include general approaches for formulating a hierarchy of safety objectives, generating a corresponding hierarchical set of safety claims, characterizing the system safety activities needed to provide supporting evidence, and presenting a risk-informed safety case that validates the claims. Volume 2, to be completed in 2012, will provide specific guidance on the conduct of the major system safety activities and the development of the evidence.

I Will Survive

I Will Survive PDF Author: Gloria Gaynor
Publisher: Macmillan + ORM
ISBN: 1466865954
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 253

Book Description
I Will Survive is the story of Gloria Gaynor, America's "Queen of Disco." It is the story of riches and fame, despair, and finally salvation. Her meteoric rise to stardom in the mid-1970s was nothing short of phenomenal, and hits poured forth that pushed her to the top of the charts, including "Honey Bee," "I Got You Under My Skin," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and the song that has immortalized her, "I Will Survive," which became a #1 international gold seller. With that song, Gloria heralded the international rise of disco that became synonymous with a way of life in the fast lane - the sweaty bodies at Studio 54, the lines of cocaine, the indescribable feeling that you could always be at the top of your game and never come down. But down she came after her early stardom, and problems followed in the wake, including the death of her mother, whose love had anchored the young singer, as well as constant battles with weight, drugs, and alcohol. While her fans always imagined her to be rich, her personal finances collapsed due to poor management; and while many envied her, she felt completely empty inside. In the early 1980s, sustained by her marriage to music publisher Linwood Simon, Gloria took three years off and reflected upon her life. She visited churches and revisited her mother's old Bible. Discovering the world of gospel, she made a commitment to Christ that sustains her to this day.
