Extreme Pursuits PDF Author: Graham Huggan
Publisher: University of Michigan Press
ISBN: 0472026666
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 225

Book Description
Recent figures suggest that there will be 1.6 billion arrivals at world airports by the year 2020. Extreme Pursuits looks at the new conditions of global travel and the unease, even paranoia, that underlies them---at the opportunities they offer for alternative identities and their oscillation between remembered and anticipated states. Graham Huggan offers a provocative account of what is happening to travel at a time characterized by extremes of social and political instability in which adrenaline-filled travelers appear correspondingly determined to take risks. It includes discussions of the links between tourism and terrorism, of contemporary modes of disaster tourism, and of the writing that derives from these; but it also confirms the existence of more responsible forms of travel/writing that demonstrate awareness of a chronically endangered world. Extreme Pursuits is the first study of its kind to link travel writing explicitly with structural changes in the global tourist industry. The book makes clear that travel writing can no longer take refuge in the classic distinctions (traveler versus tourist, foreigner versus native) on which it previously depended. Such distinctions---which were dubious in the first place---no longer make sense in an increasingly globalized world. Huggan argues accordingly that the category "travel writing" must include experimental ethnography and prose fiction; that it should concern itself with other kinds of travel practices, such as those related to Holocaust deportation and migrant labor; and that it should encompass representations of travelers and "traveling cultures" that appear in popular media, especially TV and film. Graham Huggan is Professor of Commonwealth and Postcolonial Literatures at the University of Leeds. He is the coauthor, with Patrick Holland, of Tourists with Typewriters: Critical Reflections on Contemporary Travel Writing (University of Michigan Press) and coauthor, with Helen Tiffin, of Postcolonial Ecocriticism (Routledge). Berkshire Encyclopedia of Extreme Sports PDF Author: Douglas Booth
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780977015955
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 404

Book Description
Over the last decade extreme has become a popular adjective to describe a range of physical pursuits and activities such as bungee jumping, dirt biking, skysurfing and street luge. Yet, notwithstanding its widespread usage, extreme remains largely a connotative term to differentiate individualistic, adventure-type sports with high aesthetic components from more functional and traditional team sports such as baseball, basketball, cricket, football and hockey. However, as well as its physical characteristics extreme also connotes an ideological dimension that refers to a range of anti-social attitudes, many of which are embodied and stand in sharp contrast to conservative, mainstream middle-class sporting values. Indeed, the ideology of extreme attracts as much attention among scholars interested in the study of sport as the physical elements. The Encyclopedia of Extreme Sports offers a comprehensive dissection of this new and emerging phenomenon, and its characteristics, philosophy, ideology, functions, history and future. component-risk-from a number of disciplinary perspectives including history, sociology, psychology, theology and physiology. In examining the history of individual extreme sports, the Encyclopedia explores ancient, feudal and cross-cultural forms while also looking at the appeal of modern extreme activities to entrepreneurs, marketers, advertisers and the media as they seek to connect with consumers in the critical 13-34-age cohort. The commercialization of extreme sports as well as their institutionalization-formation of governing bodies, grand prix circuits, and inclusion in traditional mega-events such as the Olympic Games-highlights another critical dimension addressed by the Encyclopedia, their contradictory and paradoxical nature. As numerous commentators have observed, participants in extreme sports are typically no less racist, sexist and class and status conscious than their brothers and sisters participating in mainstream sports. cross-cultural and historical extreme sports; thematic essays; biographies of leading extreme exponents; descriptions of the best known extreme playgrounds.

Author: Chris Brooke
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 9781300389286
Category : Sports & Recreation

Pages : 80

Book Description
This is the true story of my dad's 1965 Shelby GT 350. He brought it home on my twelfth birthday and I was privileged to drive it for 40 to 50 thousand miles. I had gotten the car and myself into a lot of trouble as I was hot rodding all over the LA and Ventura landscape. I met Mr. Shelby at the Reno Air Races when he was with Barron Hilton. The first meeting I could not explain how much his car had meant to me so I went home and started writing. The initial letter he read and signed and took the rest of my manuscript to read later. Steve Fossett disappeared the following year preventing me from catching up to Mr. Shelby at the races and things happenned the next two years so now I will never know in his own words what he thought first hand. I get into some Moto Cross history and some of the Malibu jobs as well as the surfing that occurred back then. This is a fun read and I hope you enjoy!!!! CB
