Book Description
Excerpt from An Oration Delivered Before the Municipal Authorities of the City of Boston, July 4, 1859 Honored by the request of the City Council to speak, in the name of Boston, on the Fourth of July, it seemed to me proper on that occasion to discuss some of our obliga tions, as Americans, to other nations and to ourselves. The facts then stated, which bear upon the aid given our country in its Revolutionary struggle, were verified by the examination of original documents in the archives of the State Department at Washington, of the French Minis try of Foreign Affairs at Paris, and of the Spanish govern ment at Seville and Madrid; and also of papers in the hands of the executor of Caron de Beaumarchais, the agent of the first benefactions of France. Book Description
Excerpt from An Oration, Delivered Before the Authorities of the City of Boston, July 4, 1842 But houses, lands, granaries, flocks, factories, warehouses, ships, banks, are only exterior possessions, -the out-works of individual ownership. When these are carried, the assault will be made upon personal security, character and life and, lastly, upon all the endearments and sanctities that cluster around the domes tic altar, - and when these are lost, humanity has nothing more to lose. Book Description
Excerpt from Extracts From an Oration Delivered Before the Authorities of the City of Boston: July 4, 1845 The horrors of these redden every page of history; while, to the disgrace of humanity, the historian has rarely applied to their brutal authors the Com. Demnation they deserve. A popular writer, in our own day, dazzled by those 'false ideas of greatness at which reason and christianity blush, does not hesi tate to dwell on them with terms of rapture and eulogy. At Tarragona, above six thousand human beings, almost all defenceless, men and women, grey hairs and infant innocence, attractive youth and wrinkled age, were butchered by the infuriated troops in one night, and the morning sun rose upon a city whose streets and houses were inundated with blood. And yet this is called a glorious exploit. This was a conquest by the French. At a later day Ciudad Rodrigo was stormed by the British, when there ensued in the license of victory, a frightful scene of plunder and violence, while shouts and screams on all sides fearfully intermingled with the groans of the wounded. The churches were desecrated, the cellars of wine and spirits were pillaged; firetwas wantonly applied to different parts of the city; and brutal intoxicationspread in every direction. It was only when the drunken men dropped'lfrima excess or fell asleep, that any' degree of order Was restored, andryeti't-pia stormmg of Ciudad Rodrigo is pronounced one of the most brilliant exploits cf the British army. This exploit was followed by the storming of Bad-afloat, in which the same scenes were enacted again with added atrocities. let the story be told in the words of -a partial historian: Shameless rapacity', brutal intemperance, savage lust cruelty and murder shrieks and piteous laments; tions, groans, shouts, imprecations, the hissing of fire bursting frorhwthe houses, the crashing of doors and windows, and the report of muskets used in violence, resounded for two days and nights in the streets of Badajoz! On the third, 'when the city was sacked, when the soldiers were exhausted by their excesses, the tumult rather subsided than was quelled! The wounded were then looked to the dead disposed of. 7' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from An Oration Delivered on the Fourth of July, 1862, Before the Municipal Authorities of the City of Boston I am here for a far other purpose. I come to plead for the Constitution of our country. I am here to show you, from my own earnest convictions, how dan gerons it may be to forego all care for the connection between the political past and the political future. I am here to state to you, as I have read them on the page of history, the fundamental conditions on which alone, as I believe, the people of these States can be a nation, and preserve their liberties. I am here to endeavor to rescue the idea of union from heresies as destructive as the disorganizing and justly reprobated heresies of secession. I wish to do what I can to define to rational and intelligent minds the real na ture and limits of the national supremacy; and to vindicate it from the corroding in uence of doctrines which are leading us away from the political faith and precepts of a free people. Book Description
Excerpt from Oration Delivered Before the City Government and Citizens of Boston, Music Hall, July 5, 1875 It is an old custom, as you know, in many of our Congregational churches, to have what is called a preparatory lecture, the purpose of which is to prepare the minds of those who are to commune, so that they shall partake of that feast of brotherly love in the right spirit. I consider my little speech to-day, this ninety-ninth anniversary of the Declaration of American Independence, to be a kind of preparatory lecture for the great feast to be held next year in Philadelphia. On the 4th of July, 1876, the thirty-seven sister States of this Republic, after a hundred years' experience of free institutions, will meet to thank God, and take courage. Certainly it is one of those happy coincidences which seem something more than mere accidents, that the people of this great Union, so long divided, and now so happily reunited, shall inaugurate the new century of freedom and union, henceforth one and inseparable, by giving and receiving the hand of fellowship, in the City of Brotherly Love. Great loss of life and treasure, their independence from England, had no intention and no desire to escape from government. They knew, for they were wise, that the absence of all government from masses of men is an absolute impos sibility. They knew that anarchy itself is govern ment; the government Of passion, Of selfishness, of folly intensified into madness; of wickedness devel oped to its highest power, and given up to the fearful work Of self-punishment. They knew that govern ment was not only necessary, but inevitable. And all their efforts were bent towards establishing the best government.
