Book Description
Experimental measurements of the gamma-ray pulse height distributions due to the products of fast-neutron-induced fission of Uranium-235 and Uranium-238 are presented. The measurements were made at nine selected times after fission from 15 minutes to 3 days. Irradiation times and counting intervals were chosen to minimize saturation and decay effects. The experimental data were used to calculate 100 energy bin distributions of the absolute number of photons/fission-sec. by means of absolute calibrations of the collimated NaI(T1) detector. The number of fissions in each sample was determined radiochemically. Machine computation was used extensively.

Depleted Uranium in Kosovo
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Environmental impact analysis
Languages : en
Pages : 196
Book Description
This report presents the findings of the first-ever international assessment of the environmental impact of depleted uranium (DU) when used in a real conflict situation. Following the confirmation by NATO that DU had been used during the Kosovo conflict, the United Nations Environment Program organized a scientific field mission to investigate the possible environmental consequences. This report presents its findings and conclusions on the presence and extent of DU contamination at the areas studied, the corresponding risks to the environment, and possible mitigation actions.

Nuclear Energy: Promise Or Peril?
Author: C R Hill
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814494461
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 286
Book Description
Nuclear energy will inevitably become an important issue worldwide in the 21st century. It pollutes the environment, with consequences that are highly controversial; and it generates plutonium — the essential component of nuclear weapons. At the same time, it is a realistic alternative to at least some of the expected huge increase in global demand for fossil-fuel burning, which itself is a major source of environmental pollution, and not least of “greenhouse” gases. This invaluable book attempts to provide, for the non-technical reader, an objective and critical account of the main issues involved. The authors are authorities in their own fields, and their contributions have been read in manuscript, discussed and criticised by a wider, international group of experts. Thus, whilst much of its contents may arouse controversy, the book should be an excellent starting point for informed public discussion of a vitally important topic.
