Book Description
Excerpt from Experimental Psychology and Pedagogy: For Teachers, Normal Colleges, and Universities The present volume has found a wide sale in Germany, and the translator trusts it will be of help to students and teachers in Britain and America. It makes no claim to be a complete text-book or manual of experimental psychology. The author emphasises this in his preface. It merely deals with those methods of experimental psychology that are particularly adapted to educational purposes. The author himself has carried out many experiments, and these he takes as a foundation for his work. Many are not exact, and many are merely tentative, hut such work is of value to the beginner, for it shows him what he must expect in his own work, and the suggestions of the author as to where further experiments are required are invaluable. Most of these experiments were carried out in the Psychological Institute of the Leipsic Teachers' Association, an institute founded and supported by an association of elementary school teachers. This should prove a stimulus to British associations to follow on the same lines. Only by making education a science can teachers hope to raise the status of their profession. As regards terminology I have followed Judd and Titchener in their translations of terms of the Wundtian psychology.
