Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences PDF Author: Wade H. Shafer

Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Spectroscopy, Modeling and Computation of Metal Chelate Solubility in Supercritical CO2

Book Description
The overall objectives of this project were to gain a fundamental understanding of the solubility and phase behavior of metal chelates in supercritical CO2. Extraction with CO2 is a excellent way to remove organic compounds from soils, sludges and aqueous solutions and recent research has demonstrated that together with chelating agents it is a viable way to remove metals, as well. In this project we sought to gain fundamental knowledge that is vital to computing phase behavior, and modeling and designing processes using CO2 to separate organics and metal compounds from DOE mixed wastes. Our overall program was a comprehensive one to measure, model and compute the solubility of metal chelate complexes in supercritical CO2 and CO2/cosolvent mixtures. One aspect of this work was the measurement of local solvation of metal chelates using UV-visible spectroscopy, which provided information on the solution microstructure. We also focused on the measurement of the solubility of met al chelates in supercritical CO2 and CO2/cosolvent mixtures, as well as the phase behavior of the chelating agents themselves in CO2. The purpose of these measurements was to provide information with which we could evaluate and develop thermodynamic models of the solubility behavior. Finally, we focused on the implementation of a more reliable computational technique, based on interval mathematics, to compute the phase equilibria using the thermodynamic models. These studies were undertaken because fundamental information about metal chelate solubility in supercritical CO2 is important in the design of processes using CO2 to extract components from mixed wastes and in determining the optimum operating conditions.

Transport of Metal Sulfides in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

Transport of Metal Sulfides in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide PDF Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:

Languages : en
Pages : 29

Book Description
This report presents the results of studies of supercritical fluid extraction of selected organics and of transition metal sulfides using carbon dioxide with and without modifiers. For the metal sulfides, the modifiers water, aqueous EDTA, methanol, and methanolic 2,4-pentanedione (acetyl acetone) were added in amounts ranging from 1 to 10 wt% depending on the specific modifier used. Extraction efficiency was studied as a function of fluid composition and extraction temperature and pressure. The objective of the work was to investigate the scientific feasibility of using this type of extraction process for metallurgical or environmental applications. Theoretical modeling studies were performed in an attempt to develop predictive capabilities for both solubility calculations and extraction simulation. The experimental studies have established the scientific feasibility of extraction and transport of selected cations by these fluids. Depending on the metal and conditions, transport of up to 12% of the starting material has been observed; however, the observed extraction efficiencies for inorganics do not approach those typical for organics under similar conditions.

The Solvent Extraction of Metal Chelates

The Solvent Extraction of Metal Chelates PDF Author: Jiří Starý
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483149463
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 255

Book Description
The Solvent Extraction of Metal Chelates is a comprehensive account of the solvent extraction (liquid-liquid extraction) of metal chelate complexes. Topics covered include the composition and stability of metal chelates; analytical applications of the solvent extraction of metal chelates; and selective extraction procedures for metals. A theoretical treatment of the solvent extraction of metal chelates is also given. This book is comprised of six chapters and begins with an overview of solvent extraction and how it can be used to solve important theoretical problems concerning the composition and stability of soluble and insoluble metal complexes. The next chapter examines the composition and stability of metal chelates based on the assumption that only uncharged complexes are dissolved and extracted by the organic solvents. A theory of the solvent extraction of metal chelates is then described, paying particular attention to a variety of factors that influence the extraction of metal chelates, including acidity, solubility and instability of the metal chelate, and organic solvent. Some analytical applications of the solvent extraction of metal chelates are also considered. The last two chapters deal with systems and selective extraction procedures for metals. This monograph will be of particular value to inorganic and analytical chemists.

Biosorption

Biosorption PDF Author: Jan Derco
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 1789234727
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 159

Book Description
Municipal and industrial wastewaters contain a wide spectrum of pollutants. Their effective removal presents a challenge for water treatment technology. Biosorption of nutrients and pollutants has been used in sewage treatment since the discovery of the activated sludge process. It is a passive uptake process by which pollutants are adsorbed on the surface of cell walls and/or dissolved in structures of microorganism cells that are present in sludge. Sorbed pollutants remain in the sludge and can be potentially released back into the environment depending on their condition and the reversibility of the pollutant-sludge interaction. An overview of typical biosorption applications for the removal of nutrients, organic pollutants, and metals in wastewater treatment is provided in different areas of their use for the protection of aquatic ecosystems and human health. This book will be of interest to operators of wastewater treatment plants and sludge treatment and disposal facilities as well as to researchers and university students in the field of environmental engineering.
