Health communication at numerous levels is vital to sustainability of healthy individuals. The notion of African-American mothers and adult daughters sharing breast health and breast cancer knowledge openly and honestly could be the initial step in addressing the high morbidity and mortality that continues to affect this population. Communication is a variable that has yet to be studied between African-American mothers diagnosed with breast cancer and their adult daughters. This study first examined whether this relationship existed, and secondly if it was strong enough in supporting and encouraging one another towards consistent breast health and breast cancer screening activities. The research also looked at whether knowledge, risk perception, self-efficacy, and communication were moderated by age, income, education, and employment status. In addition, the investigator assessed connectedness, interdependence, and trust in hierarchy subscales as utilized in the Mother and Adult-Daughter Questionnaire. Health care providers have yet been able to affect change in the overwhelming mortality rate in African-American women with breast cancer disease. The purpose of this descriptive, quantitative, feasibility study was to evaluate the affects of knowledge, risk perception, communication, self-efficacy, connectedness, interdependence, trust in hierarchy, and to identify independent variables most likely to encourage behavior change in adult daughters. The conceptual framework for this study was based on the Theory of Reasoned Action. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, contingency tables using chi square, and correlations were used to analyze data from a sample of 16 African-American mothers with breast cancer and their adult daughters without a diagnosis of breast cancer. This study found a positive correlation between mother- and adult daughter relationships and encouragement by mothers for their adult daughters to participate in breast health activities with this particular sample. As a feasibility study, the sample size prevented results with statistical power. Further studies are needed to fully appreciate the extent of this phenomenon.

Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Purpose: Having self-esteem and self-efficacy are notable strengths, capable of driving those with these qualities forward in life. This paper will examine adolescent girls’ perceptions of their relationships with their mothers and their impacts on self-efficacy and self-esteem, as this researcher theorized that a positive causation exists between the two dependent variables. Research Question: Does the perception by the daughter of a positive mother-daughter relationship increase her chances of developing self-esteem and self-efficacy? Methods: The researcher utilized secondary data from California State University Northridge’s Department of Psychology investigators. Results: My findings implicated low-to-moderate positive correlations between all of the following variables: mothers’ support and daughters’ self-esteem; mothers’ support and daughters’ selfefficacy; mothers’ knowledge and daughters’ self-esteem; and mothers’ knowledge and daughters’ self-efficacy.

[Abstract] This study examines the question, "What is the daughter's experience of nurturing her mother who has breast cancer?" This question emerged from a personal experience. Therefore, the heuristic model was utilized to examine this question further. The heuristic model consists of the following six phases, which were completed during the course of this study: initial engagement, immersion, incubation, illumination, explication, and creative synthesis. A current review of literature did not reveal an identical study, however, there were studies related to a daughter's reaction to her mother's breast cancer diagnosis, young children and adolescent responses to their mothers' breast cancer and the spouses' reactions to their partners breast cancer diagnosis. Six women whose mothers had been treated for breast cancer were interviewed using the informal conversational interview format. The interviews lasted approximately two hours and were taped, then transcribed. Using the steps prescribed by the heuristic method, the data was organized and analyzed. The data analysis revealed the following six themes: reaction to mother's breast cancer diagnosis, reaction to trauma of mother's treatment, perceived changes in the mother/daughter relationship, and thoughts about personal risk, coping strategies, and personal sacrifices. The findings of this research may be used by medical professionals and psychologists who may treat patients with breast cancer, and their daughters and other family members who are also affected.
The Effects of Perceived Stress and Perceived Social Support on Adjustment in Children and Adolescents with Cancer

Given the potentially traumatic and stressful nature of having childhood cancer, results investigating the level of adjustment among children and adolescents with cancer have been quite surprising, demonstrating levels of adjustment similar to the adaptation of children/adolescents from the general population. Due to these findings, studies in pediatric psychology have sought to identify the specific risk and resistance factors that may protect children and adolescents from adjustment problems. The current study is the first empirical investigation to examine the combined impact of perceived stress and perceived social support on adjustment. Hypotheses for the present study were as follows: (1) Children and adolescents in the present study would demonstrate levels of adjustment similar to instrument norms; (2) There would be significant differences between reports of adjustment from children/adolescents and their parents; (3) Significant direct effects would be demonstrated between perceived stress and adjustment; (4) Significant direct effects would be demonstrated between perceived social support and adjustment; and (5) There would be empirical support for mediating but not moderating effects of perceived social support in the relationship between perceived stress and adjustment. Subjects for the current study were 221 children and adolescents with cancer from Children's Hospital, San Diego, Children's Hospital, Los Angeles, and Children's Hospital, Long Beach. Children and adolescents in this study demonstrated levels of adjustment equal to or better than instrument norms and child (but not adolescent) reports of their adjustment demonstrated nonsignificant correlations with the reports of adjustment from their parents. In addition, although no mediating effects were demonstrated for perceived social support, statistically and clinically significant direct effects were found for both perceived stress and perceived social support. Results from the present study may serve to guide future research investigating the risk and protective factors of adjustment in pediatric cancer. In addition, these findings may suggest effective interventions designed to reduce perceived stress (i.e., relaxation and guided imagery) and increase perceived social support (i.e., social skills training and school reintegration) and have implications for studying resiliency in children and adolescents facing profound adversity.
