Nutrient cycling is an important matter in all crop production but it is particularly important in oilseed production. The efficiency by which oilseed crops can be grown and the impact of their cultivation dictates the future of bioenergy policy. The dissertation that follows attempts to dissect the intricacies of nutrient cycling in Pacific Northwestern oilseed production to inform policy and provide farmers with valuable information. This dissertation is comprised of four chapters including 1) Nitrogen Use Efficiency In Eastern Washington Canola Production, 2) The Impact of Nitrogen Rate and Timing and Sulfur Rate On Eastern Washington Canola Grain, Oil Yield, and Oil Quality, 3) Cropping System, Nitrogen Use Efficiency, and Adoption Rate Impact on Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Potential for Pacific Northwest Canola Production, 4) High Resolution Imaging to Assess Oilseed Species' Root Hair Responses to Soil Water Stress. Canola has the potential to be a successful crop in the dryland Pacific Northwest due to its high yield potential with little available water; however, many challenges must be overcome. Nitrogen recommendations should account for canola's ability to access residual soil N and redeposit it for a following crop. Nitrogen timing and sulfur rate and timing appear to have little effect on grain and oil yield in spite of previous reports to the contrary. Canola nitrogen use efficiency has a major impact on life cycle greenhouse gas production when compared to that of fossil derived diesel. The Environmental Protection Agency's Renewable Fuels policies would do well to encourage improved nitrogen use efficiency in biofuel feedstock production to magnify the greenhouse gas mitigation potential that renewable fuels offer. Utilization of simple and inexpensive imaging techniques are effective ways to conduct root research that may help in understanding the role of plant root hairs in soil carbon accumulation and storage. High resolution imaging of various root systems under varying levels of water availability indicate root surface area, density, and architecture are significantly affected by water availability. Nutrient uptake, cropping system and soil carbon sequestration models that do not account for these differences are prone to error.

Sustainable management of soils is an important global issue of the 21st century. Feeding roughly 8 billion people with an environmentally sustainable production system is a major challenge, especially considering the fact that 10% of the world’s population at risk of hunger and 25% at risk of malnutrition. Accordingly, the 68th United Nations (UN) general assembly declared 2016 the “International Year of Pulses” to raise awareness and to celebrate the role of pulses in human nutrition and welfare. Likewise, the assembly declared the year 2015 as the “International Year of Soils” to promote awareness of the role of “healthy soils for a healthy life” and the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS) has declared 2015-2024 as the International Decade of Soils. Including legumes in cropping systems is an important toward advancing soil sustainability, food and nutritional security without compromising soil quality or its production potential. Several textbooks and edited volumes are currently available on general soil fertility or on legumes but‚ to date‚ none have been dedicated to the study of “Legumes for Soil Health and Sustainable Management”. This is important aspect, as the soil, the epidermis of the Earth (geoderma)‚ is the major component of the terrestrial biosphere. This book explores the impacts of legumes on soil health and sustainability, structure and functioning of agro-ecosystems, agronomic productivity and food security, BNF, microbial transformation of soil N and P, plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria, biofertilizers, etc. With the advent of fertilizers, legumes have been sidelined since World War II, which has produced serious consequences for soils and the environment alike. A review of the recently published information on the nutritional aspects of oil seed crops in relation to their yield and quality reveals a substantial scope for increasing their production in the country. National self-sufficiency of edible oil would be enhanced if the productivity of the oil seed crops on marginal soils under rain fed conditions is increased through adoption of improved management technology and improved germ-plasm. This warrants intensive research efforts in these areas. Applying mineral fertilizers in balanced amounts and in an integrated manner by combining with bulky organic manures and crop residues can ensure sustainable production at higher productivity and higher quality level of the oil seed crops. For optimum utilization of other essential inputs, fertilizer requirements need to be fine-tuned, especially in oil seed-based cropping systems and intercropping systems. Besides making best use of the applied nutrients, such management practices can substantially benefit the major cereal crops from the fixed-N, if the accompanying oil seed crop happens to be a leguminous like soybean or groundnut.
