European Telematics

European Telematics PDF Author: Josiane Jouët
Publisher: North Holland
ISBN:
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
Today, at the start of the 1990's, there is one country where Telematics has entered its adult phase - France. This French success story - more than five million terminals distributed - is interesting because its history is filled with conflict and has, at critical junctures, narrowly escaped failure. Although it is rare for communications researchers to be able to intervene live while a new medium is emerging, this is what most of the authors of this book have accomplished. The different parts of this anthology reflect the principle currents of study that have been covered by research. The first part is dedicated to the state of the art. Its objective is to sketch a global panorama of telematics, especially in France. The second part takes up the story of the medium's technical genesis on the one hand and its socio-economic development on the other. The third part analyses in a more detailed fashion the role played by the actors competing in the creation of telematics. The final part takes up the phenomenon of the messageries.

High-Tech Europe

High-Tech Europe PDF Author: Wayne Sandholtz
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520414551
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 362

Book Description
Governments have recognized for decades the dynamic role played by microelectronics, computers, and telecommunications in the modern economy. Although Europe's deficiencies in these crucial sectors had long been acknowledged, it was not until the 1980s that European nations began collaborating to develop and promote high-tech industries. Their collaboration gives rise to many questions. Why, for example, did the joint efforts come at such a late date rather than in the 1960s or '70s? And how is it possible to work together in economically sensitive areas? These questions point to fundamental issues in the areas of international cooperation, international institutions, and technology policy. Before the institution of the collaborative programs ESPRIT (European Strategic Programme for Research and Development in Information Technology), RACE (R & D in Advanced Communications-technologies in Europe), and EUREKA (European Research Coordination Agency) in the 1980s, each European country sought its own technological renaissance through protection of national firms behind walls of technical standards, procurement preferences, and research subsidies. This thorough, carefully researched work examines the breakdown of these walls. It will appeal to political scientists, economists, and scholars of technology and Western Europe interested in the political contours of the high-tech landscape. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1992.

Internet, Telematics, and Health PDF Author: Marcelo C. Sosa-Iudicissa
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 9789051992892
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 564

Book Description
This book is the final result of a team effort involving a large number of international experts, coordinated and led by Dr. Marcelo Sosa-Iudicissa, in Brussels, Dr. Nora Oliveri, in Buenos Aires, Dr. Carlos A. Gamboa, in Washington, and Ms. Jean Roberts, in England. This makes the present book a unique publication, presenting a true global vision of the opportunities opened up by the advent of the Internet for doctors, health professionals, planners and managers, as well as for patients and the public at large, wanting to know more and better about their own health maintenance and protection. It also presents a range of informatics and telematics applications available nowadays to medicine, examples on how people with a health concern are using the Internet in both industrialised and developing countries. This change, bringing empowerment through knowledge, is showing us the trend towards a New Health Paradigm in the In-formation Society. This book is aimed at medical practitioners, administrators, teachers and students who wish an authoritative state-of-the-art as well as how-to for commencing or enhancing wish done on the Internet. Intelligent Transport Systems in Europe

Intelligent Transport Systems in Europe PDF Author: Mike McDonald
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 981270082X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 338

Book Description
"Unluckily, in the recent literature the number of papers on the application of intelligent systems, especially fuzzy sets, have been decreasing considerably. The potential for those applications, however, has not diminished at all. On the contrary, the more complex applications become and the more decision support systems rely on human knowledge and experience, the more relevant and attractive become intelligent techniques. For publications, however, very often the problem arises, that those applications are not suited for publication because they are too complex for any one paper. In this paper it will be attempted to describe important applications in traffic control, in container terminal management and in ground control of airports and give further indications on other possible applications."--Publisher's website.
