Author: Agnes Buka
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 1848167997
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 299
Book Description
The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Nonlinear Optical Materials
Author: Jerome V. Moloney
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780387985817
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 270
Book Description
Mathematical methods play a significant role in the rapidly growing field of nonlinear optical materials. This volume discusses a number of successful or promising contributions. The overall theme of this volume is twofold: (1) the challenges faced in computing and optimizing nonlinear optical material properties; and (2) the exploitation of these properties in important areas of application. These include the design of optical amplifiers and lasers, as well as novel optical switches. Research topics in this volume include how to exploit the magnetooptic effect, how to work with the nonlinear optical response of materials, how to predict laser-induced breakdown in efficient optical devices, and how to handle electron cloud distortion in femtosecond processes.

ETUDE PAR MICROSCOPIE ELECTRONIQUE ET SIMULATIONS MONTE CARLO DU COMPORTEMENT DES PAROIS DE DOMAINES A L'APPROCHE D'UNE TRANSITION DU SECOND ORDRE DANS FE-AL
Author: DAVID.. LE FLOC'H
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : fr
Pages : 196
Book Description
NOUS AVONS ETUDIE LE COMPORTEMENT THERMODYNAMIQUE DES PAROIS D'ANTIPHASE, DANS L'ALLIAGE FE-27%AL, A L'APPROCHE DE LA TRANSITION DE PHASE DO#3 B2 PAR MICROSCOPIE ELECTRONIQUE. LA TRANSITION ETANT DU 2ND ORDRE, ELLE IMPLIQUE LE COMPORTEMENT CRITIQUE DE CERTAINES GRANDEURS THERMODYNAMIQUES AU VOISINAGE DE LA TEMPERATURE DE TRANSITION T#C. L'APPROXIMATION CHAMP MOYEN PREVOIT UNE DIVERGENCE EN LOI PUISSANCE DE LA LONGUEUR DE CORRELATION X#I EN FONCTION DE L'ECART EN TEMPERATURE PAR RAPPORT A T#C. EN CONSEQUENCE, LES PAROIS S'ELARGISSENT PROGRESSIVEMENT A L'APPROCHE DE T#C, LEUR ETALEMENT ETANT DIRECTEMENT PILOTE PAR X#I. NOUS AVONS REALISE UNE DETERMINATION QUANTITATIVE DE LA LOI D'EVOLUTION DE X#I EN ETUDIANT LE COMPORTEMENT DES PAROIS, EN DESSOUS DE LA TRANSITION. CELLES-CI SONT VISUALISEES EN IMAGES DE CONTRASTE PAR LA TECHNIQUE DU CHAMP SOMBRE. CETTE TECHNIQUE A ETE CHOISIE CAR DES CALCULS MULTI-ONDES ONT MONTRE QUE L'INTENSITE DES FRANGES, CARACTERISANT UNE PAROI, EST TRES SENSIBLE A X#I ET A L'ECART A L'ANGLE DE BRAGG S ET QUE LE CONTRASTE DE FRANGES DISPARAIT POUR DES VALEURS CRITIQUES DE X#I DEPENDANT DE S. LA METHODE EXPERIMENTALE A CONSISTE A ETUDIER L'EVOLUTION DU CONTRASTE DES FRANGES POUR DIFFERENTS ECARTS A L'ANGLE DE BRAGG EN CHAUFFANT L'ALLIAGE IN SITU ET A DETERMINER LES TEMPERATURES AUXQUELS LES CONTRASTES DISPARAISSENT. PAR UN CONTROLE PRECIS DE DIFFERENTS PARAMETRES EXPERIMENTAUX, CES TEMPERATURES ONT PU ETRE CORRELEES DE MANIERE QUANTITATIVE AUX VALEURS CRITIQUES DE X#I DETERMINEES PAR DES CALCULS MULTI-ONDES. NOUS AVONS PU MONTRER QUE LA LONGUEUR DE CORRELATION DIVERGEAIT BIEN SELON UNE LOI PUISSANCE DE TYPE (T#C T)#-#N AVEC N EGAL A 0.63. CETTE LOI CRITIQUE EST VERIFIEE SUR UNE GAMME DE TEMPERATURE DE PLUS DE 100C. CETTE ETUDE A ETE COMPLETEE PAR DES CALCULS MONTE CARLO UTILISANT UN MODELE D'ISING D'INTERACTIONS CHIMIQUES SUR RESEAU FIXE, QUI A PERMIS DE RETROUVER LES COMPORTEMENTS EXPERIMENTAUX ET D'EXPLIQUER L'EVOLUTION DE LA RUGOSITE DES PAROIS EN FONCTION DE T.
