L'apparition des dents joue un rôle important dans le processus de maturation de la mastication, qui est essentielle à la digestion. Chez l'enfant, la denture apparaît en constante évolution. Les périodes d'éruption dentaires sont nombreuses. L'échantillon de l'étude Milord comprend 1945 enfants âgés de 4 à 12 ans, sélectionnés parmi 22 écoles du Puy-de-Dôme et répartis en classe d'âge. 11 investigateurs ont recensé sur cette population d'enfants la présence de la dent, temporaire ou permanente, sur l'arcade dentaire, et la présence d'un contact inter-arcade. Nous abservons qu'à l'âge de 10 et 11 ans, les enfants ont tous la dent 46. 87,7% des enfants de 10 ans présentent la dent 46 en contact avec la dent antagoniste et 89,1% des enfants de 11 ans. Il existe un décalage important entre l'âge d'éruption de la dent et l'âge d'apparition d'un contact inter-arcade, qui coïnciderait avec le temps nécessaire à la dent pour parfaire sa mise en fonction. De nombreuses études se sont penchées sur la détermination de l'âge d'éruption dentaire, mais peu d'entre elles se sont intéressées à la mise en fonction de la dent, c'est-à-dire la mise en contact d'une dent mandibulaire avec au moins une dent antagoniste. Le but de notre étude est de décrire l'âge d'éruption dentaire et l'âge de mise en fonction des dents permanentes dans une population d'enfants français.
