Registered Nurses are expected to behave professionally and ethically by the society who trusts that they are competent to provide care. Nursing education programs must therefore include ethical development in their academic curricula. Yet a troubling finding is that nursing faculty members disagree on what constitutes unethical and dishonest nursing student behaviors. In an effort to mitigate student cheating, a top-down approach was designed to measure the impact of a specifically designed, brief training session on adjunct nursing faculty perceptions on identifying and dealing with dishonest and unethical behaviors. The three hour training session was rooted in Michaelsen's Team-Based Learning strategy, and was found to be positively significant related to improving understanding in a convenience sample of adjunct nursing faculty at a large, southern community college. Implications of these important findings for teaching and learning in adjunct nursing groups, as well as other adjunct groups outside nursing are discussed and recommendations for future study are offered.

The aim of the study was to determine if senior nursing students who witness negative behavior in a video that simulates a clinical experience are able to recognize the behaviors as negative and to determine if they would report or ignore the behavior. While the clinical rotation provides an essential venue for socialization into the role of the professional nurse, socialization into a culture of abuse also begins at this time. Clinical nurses are frequently identified as a major perpetrator of the negative behavior experienced by students. Episodes of negative behavior, verbal and physical, are under reported. Some reasons given for underreporting include that being a recipient of violence was viewed as a rite of passage and the student has a desire to fit in. This was a mixed method, two groups, randomly assigned, intervention trial. The intervention group attended a one-hour training program on recognition and reporting of negative behavior while the control group attended a one-hour session on sleep and shift work. Both groups then viewed a video containing six vignettes simulating a clinical experience including negative behavior and completed the study survey. The independent variable is the negative behavior training program. The dependent variable is the student's identification of negative behavior in the video. Statistical analysis found no significant difference between the groups demographics. Statistical significance was found in identifying nonverbal abuse. Both groups were able to recognize the verbal and physical negative behaviors. Emerging themes were developed from the qualitative responses. Education focusing on recognizing covert forms of negative behavior and the continued need to report, if incorporated into nursing education curriculum may help break the cycle of violence identified as "eating our young".

Clinical experience is the most important component of nursing education. As part of the clinical education environment, the teaching behaviors of nursing faculty have considerable potential to influence the learning of students. To produce effective learning by students, nurse educators have a responsibility to instruct students so that learning is optimal. The purpose of this study was to explore the perception of students of clinical teaching behaviors of nursing faculty. The study uncovers new knowledge about clinical teaching behaviors based on the student perceptions during their own clinical experiences. A non-experimental survey with a descriptive exploratory design was used. A single convenience sample was drawn from senior level nursing students attending an on-campus associate degree nursing program in southern North Carolina. All students had completed clinical courses involving patient care. The instrument utilized was the Nursing Clinical Teacher Effectiveness Inventory. The survey consists of forty seven teaching behaviors for which students rated frequency of use for the clinical instructor on a seven point Likert scale.
