Racism and Borders

Racism and Borders PDF Author: Jeff Shantz
Publisher: Algora Publishing
ISBN: 0875868096
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 81

Book Description
Despite claims about globalization, we see increasing surveillance, tightened restrictions and growing punitive regimes at international borders. This critical collection examines processes of racialization in relation to border regulations and restrictions. It analyses border controls, racism, and representations of race, within multinational contexts as aspects of neo-liberal governance. It also looks at means by which people resist or challenge racialization. This collection uses the lenses of sociology, criminology, art, literary criticism and political science to critically examine varied processes of racialization, criminalization and resistance in relation to borders with reference to multi-national contexts in the current period. a. a"

Guatáo

Guatáo PDF Author: James P. Choca
Publisher: Page Publishing Inc
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 257

Book Description
The title Guatáo comes from a Cuban expression, “It ended like the feast at Guatáo,” meaning that it did not end up well. This book is the fictional account of two strained brothers who try to reestablish their affectional childhood ties in the country of their birth. The contrasts explored include the political differences between Cuba and the United States, the lifestyles of the two brothers, the obstacles they were facing in their own lives, their romantic involvements, and their financial situations. The story is a metaphor for the strained relationship between the two countries—countries that, because of their geographic closeness and cultural similarities, should have been best friends but have seldom been.

Enflamed by the Sacramental Word

Enflamed by the Sacramental Word PDF Author: Vincent J. Pastro
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1498271618
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 215

Book Description
Christian proclamation, says Dietrich Bonhoeffer, is the living Christ walking among the people. Preachers know that Jesus is the living Word, and that the Spirit of Jesus animates the preaching event. Preaching is an epiclesis, an invocation of the Holy Spirit over God's holy people. As such, it must touch their imagination. Pastro proposes that preaching is the living ecclesial presence of Jesus Christ, Sacramental Word of the God of the poor. The Word speaks from the imagination of the poor-the economic poor, but also the "new poor" of the twenty-first century: entire indigenous cultures, women, those marginalized because of their sexuality, undocumented immigrants in dominant cultures, and many others. All Christian preachers in every context are called to solidarity with the poor.

Visual Cortex

Visual Cortex PDF Author: Stephane Molotchnikoff
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 9535107607
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 427

Book Description
The neurosciences have experienced tremendous and wonderful progress in many areas, and the spectrum encompassing the neurosciences is expansive. Suffice it to mention a few classical fields: electrophysiology, genetics, physics, computer sciences, and more recently, social and marketing neurosciences. Of course, this large growth resulted in the production of many books. Perhaps the visual system and the visual cortex were in the vanguard because most animals do not produce their own light and offer thus the invaluable advantage of allowing investigators to conduct experiments in full control of the stimulus. In addition, the fascinating evolution of scientific techniques, the immense productivity of recent research, and the ensuing literature make it virtually impossible to publish in a single volume all worthwhile work accomplished throughout the scientific world. The days when a single individual, as Diderot, could undertake the production of an encyclopedia are gone forever. Indeed most approaches to studying the nervous system are valid and neuroscientists produce an almost astronomical number of interesting data accompanied by extremely worthy hypotheses which in turn generate new ventures in search of brain functions. Yet, it is fully justified to make an encore and to publish a book dedicated to visual cortex and beyond. Many reasons validate a book assembling chapters written by active researchers. Each has the opportunity to bind together data and explore original ideas whose fate will not fall into the hands of uncompromising reviewers of traditional journals. This book focuses on the cerebral cortex with a large emphasis on vision. Yet it offers the reader diverse approaches employed to investigate the brain, for instance, computer simulation, cellular responses, or rivalry between various targets and goal directed actions. This volume thus covers a large spectrum of research even though it is impossible to include all topics in the extremely diverse field of neurosciences.
