Book Description
Excerpt from Essays and Criticisms, Vol. 1 of 2 So vast a convulsion as that initiated in 1789 could never, of course, have taken place but for the fact that many independent circumstances happened then and there to concur in its production. No doubt most of the above suggested causes did co-0perate, though we must recollect that the land was much subdivided before 1789, as also that De Tocqueville has once for all shown that, in its essentials, the new system was an exaggeration rather than a reversal of the system which had preceded it. But it will be some time yet before all the causes of the movement are fully known, and thanks are due to M. Taine for having given very valuable aid towards their elucidation. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays and Reviews, Vol. 1 of 2 IT is impossible to cast even a careless glance over the literature of the last thirty years, without perceiving the prominent station occupied by critics, reviewers and essayists. Criticism, in the old days of Monthly Reviews and Gentlemen's Magazines, was quite an humble occu pation, and was chiefly monopolized by the barren rascals of letters, who scribbled, sinned and starved, in attics and cellars; but it has since been almost exalted into a creative art, and numbers among its professors some of the most accomplished writers of the age. Dennis, Rhymer, Winstanley, Theophilus Cibber, Grif fiths, and other eminent hands, as well as the name less contributors to defunct periodicals, have departed, body and soul, and left not a wreck behind; and their places have been supplied by such men as Coleridge. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays and Criticisms, Vol. 2 of 2 Although we are unable to agree entirely with Mr. Darwin in this remark, it none the less contains an undoubted truth. \ve cannot agree, because we feel that a false theory which keenly solicits the imagination, put forward by a writer widely and deservedly esteemed, and which reposes on a multitude of facts difficult to verify, skilfully interwoven, and exceedingly hard to unravel, is likely to be very prejudicial to science. Nevertheless, science cannot make progress with out the action of two distinct classes of thinkers: the first consisting of men of creative genius, who strike out brilliant hypotheses, and who may be spoken of as theorisers' in the good sense of the word; the second, of men possessed of the critical faculty, and who test, mould into shape, perfect or destroy, the hypotheses thrown out by the former class. Book Description
Excerpt from Biographical and Critical Essays, Vol. 1 of 2: Reprinted From Reviews, With Additions and Corrections The reason, obvious enough, is given in a sentence from Dunlop's 'history of Fiction, ' quoted by Scott Those minute references immediately lead us to give credit to the whole narrative, since we think they would hardly have been mentioned unless they were true.' Ars est celare artem. The effect would fail if they had a showy character, as if invented for effect. Homer's employment of such details simply proves that he was a master of his art, and it is one of his highest triumphs to have produced on the distinguished statesman and scholar an effect analogous to that which Swift produced on the rude sailor, who declared that he knew Captain Gulliver very well, but that he lived at Queenhithe, not at Wapping. Book Description
Excerpt from Miscellaneous Essays and Reviews, Vol. 1 of 2 The Essays and Reviews in this volume are pub lished in this form at the suggestion of others. They have been revised and corrected with such care as I could bestow upon them by having them read to me. Most of them were received favourably at the time when they were first published; and now, after the lapse of many years since they were first presented to the public, they have accomplished a purpose which was never contemplated at the time when they were written - by furnishing occupation when unable, by an affiictive dispensation of Providence, to read or write. I would hepe, however, that they may subserve a higher end than this, and that they may do something to diffuse and perpetuate correct sentiments on the various points which are discussed. Book Description
Excerpt from Selected Essays, Vol. 1 of 2 The talents of the Smiths for controversy must have been singularly precocious, for the tradition goes that, before they were old enough for school, they might be seen neglecting games, and often lying on the floor, stretched over their books, and discussing with loud voice and vehement gesticulation, every point that arose.' Robert and Cecil were sent to Eton, Courtenay and Sydney to Winchester, where Sydney rose in due time to be captain of the school. Such were his own and his brother's proficiency that their schoolfellows signed a round-robin refusing to compete for the college prizes, if the Smiths, who always gained them, were allowed to enter the lists. Book Description
Excerpt from Men, Women, and Books, Vol. 1 of 2: A Selection of Sketches, Essays, and Critical Memoirs, From His Uncollected Prose Writings Should anything else in the impulsive portions of those essays, which were written when he was young, appear a little out of the pale of recognized manners, in point of style and animal spirits, the new reader will be good enough to understand, what old ones have long been aware of, and grown kind to, - namely, that the writer comes of a tropical race; and that what might have been afi'ectation in a colder blood, was only enthusiasm in a warm one. He is not con scious. However, of having suffered anything to re main, to which a reasonable critic could object. He has pruned a few passages, in order that he might not seem to take undue advantage of an extempore or anonymous allowance and in later years, particularly when seated on the critical bench, he has been pleased, and perhaps profited, in conforming himself to the customs of the court. But had he attempted to alter the general spirit of his writings, he would have belied the love of truth that is in him, and even shown himself ungrateful to public warrant. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays, Critical and Political, Vol. 1 The essays here collected were written many years ago, but they are concerned with matters - such as the merits of great writers - which never grow old. It is on that ground I have thought it worth while reprinting them. In each case I have given the date of the earlier publication that any of their contem porary references may be understood. The prisoner who was asked if he had anything to say why sen tence should not be passed on him for the crime of which he had been convicted, said that he hoped his lordship would take into consideration the youth of his counsel. It would be foolish to claim that these essays were early essays, and therefore en titled to clement criticism. The judgments expressed were the opinions of a younger man than the writer of this preface, as the dates frequently show, but although the latter might alter some of the criticisms, he on the whole agrees with these more youthful utterances. He has to thank the manager of the Times for his permission to reproduce two of the essays con. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
