Book Description
Excerpt from Equipment for the Farm and the Farmstead This book, as suggested by its title, contains a discussion of the general problem of equipping the farm and the farmstead. The material herein presented has been collected from various sources during the authors service as a teacher. An effort has been made to bring together and to present in a readable and teachable form such facts and principles as the modern farmer demands and must understand for the successful practice of his profession. It is only in very recent years that questions such as those discussed in this book have been given the consideration which they deserve. Colleges, experiment stations, institute speakers, and lecturers generally, have given their full time and effort during the past quarter of a century to the discussion of larger crop yields and better live stock. It is well perhaps that it should have been so, for profitable crop and live-stock production are the foundation of agricultural prosperity. On the other hand, when one reflects that about one fifth of the total value of farms in the corn belt is wrapped up in buildings and machinery, the wonder is that the subject has not been given adequate discussion long before. But times have changed and the remarkable interest which is now being taken in such questions as farm buildings, water supply, sewage-disposal, farm lighting etc. proves beyond question that information on these and kindred subjects is being eagerly sought. The point of view taken in this book has been, first, that of the farmer of the present who is seeking information as to ways and means of making his work easier and his burdens lighter to whom it is hoped the book will make a strong appeal and in the solution of whose problems it is believed he may find practical help; second, that of the student who is to become the farmer of the future. Morton's Handbooks of the Farm, Vol. 6 PDF Author: William Burness

Book Description
Excerpt from Morton's Handbooks of the Farm, Vol. 6: Equipment Drainage Implements. - A draining plough for steam power* consists of a vertical coulter carrying a horizontal mole suspended from the beam frame of a four-wheeled carriage. It is hauled by wire rope from the winding drum of a steam engine, and the mole is raised or lowered by screw gear as it travels, according to the unevenness of the surface. When used as a mole plough two pits are first dug, one at each headland: the coulter is then lowered into the one and hauled to the other, the mole leaving an open waterway behind. When pipes are used, pits are dug at intervals: a wire rope is hooked on to the heel of the mole, and pipes strung on it are drawn through the distance between two pits; the wire rope is withdrawn, leaving the pipes behind, and another length of pipes is strung on. Depth 2 to 3 feet. For very steep inclines, and in subsoils liable to wash away, mole drains are unsuitable. Book Description
Excerpt from The Book of Farm Implements and Machines I 71 Steam Cultivation - Mr William Smith of Woolstone, Bucks Mr John Allin Williams of Balyden, Wilts and Mr P. A. Halkett of Merton Road, Wandsworth, London. These gentlemen, by a large expenditure of time and money, have done much tos the solu tion of the question of economical steam-cultivation. The inven tions of Mr Smith and Mr Williams depend for their action on a system of traction by ropes, pulleys, and windlasses, after the man ner, more or less modified, employed by Mr Fowler, whose plan we have fully described. Mr Halkett's plan involves arrangements of decided novelty, inasmuch as he prepares the land to be cultivated for the operation of the implements employed, by laying down tram or guide ways, by which he proposes to insure a precision of Opera tion otherwise unattainable. Of machines or implements adapted to steam-cultivation, to be dragged over the land either by the direct power of a portable steam-engine fitted with Boydell's Endless Railway, or by the windlass-and-pulley system of Fowler, and cognate plans, we may here notice the Cultivator, with revolving tines, of Mr Bernard Samuelson of Banbury, and the Eleven-tined Cultivator of Mr Richard Coleman of Chelmsford. Of recent patents connected with steam cultivation now attracting attention, mention may be made of those of Mr A. Dacre Lacy, of Hall House, Knayton, near Thirsk, York shire; of Mr Thomas Keddy, of Handsforth, Stafford; of Mr T. Ricketts, of Castle Foundry, Buckingham and of Messrs Howard and Baker, Bedford.
