Book Description
Stoicism is a logical philosophy. Herein, one may learn to reason like a Stoic, which leads to making progress toward living in accord with nature, and from which an abiding happiness is produced. Secundum Naturam is an exploration of Stoicism, given the thesis that the philosophical doctrines derive from Stoic logic. Itself, Stoic logic derives from one, first principle: contradiction does not exist in nature, although we contradict nature when we err. The connectives, modalities, and argument resolutions are all defined with respect to contradiction as conflict (between Both p and Not p). And when your will contradicts nature, you are living contrary to nature, while the goal is to live secundum naturam, according to nature. Best of all, learn how to improve yourself with Stoic logic, according to reason, according to nature, only with Secundum Naturam.

Serpent Crescent
Author: Vivian de Klerk
Publisher: Pan Macmillan South africa
ISBN: 1770107509
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 260
Book Description
In the small rural town of Qonda, South Africa, the power and water supplies are unreliable, property prices are down, and citizens are slowly suffocating in the acrid smoke from the municipal dump. Recently retired English teacher Megan Merton has lived here all her life, most of it at No. 8 Serpent Crescent. So who better than this self-styled pillar of society to shine a spotlight on the decline and dysfunction, not to mention the dubious activities, past and present, of many of her neighbours. Nefarious deeds and bad behaviour deserve harsh treatment and appropriate retribution, if not consignment to one of Dante’s fiendish nine circles of hell. At least that’s what Megan believes – in fact she’s been taking matters into her own hands, unnoticed, for years. And now she has decided to write it all down, to shake all of the skeletons loose, and rejoice in the inventive punishments she devised and personally delivered to the wicked. Then her neighbour Elizabeth Cardew, a lecturer in Classical Studies, suffers a stroke and Megan is entrusted with the keys to No. 9. While Elizabeth begins a long recovery at the local care facility, Whispering Pines, Megan relishes the chance to snoop. Curious as to ‘what a stroke victim looks like’, she decides to visit and see for herself. A bond develops between the two women – one a cold and calculating sociopath, the other a courageous and lonely academic – something that takes both of them by surprise. Vivian de Klerk’s sharp observations and brilliantly acerbic satirical wit make this multi-layered novel at once horrifying, shocking and poignant – and very, very funny.

Semioethics as Existential Dialogue
Author: Susan Petrilli
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040132944
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 299
Book Description
This collection brings together perspectives on the interplay of communication, dialogue, and responsibility, exploring communicative acts of disruption toward a social environment attuned to short-sighted individualism. Semioethics highlights the condition of inevitable entanglement with the other at the origin of sociality, which demands a response to the other based on listening and accountability. The volume introduces readers to the theoretical foundations of semioethics, an emergent direction within sign and language studies which relies upon a commitment to otherness, unindifference, and dialogue. Building on the dialogic approaches of Mikhail Bakhtin and Emmanuel Levinas, chapters, grouped into five sections, are all guided by the notion of responsibility toward the other outside do ut des logic and greedy exchange. This collection highlights the ways in which semioethics considers the ethical implications of the signs that mediate dialogue among persons in the social sphere, public and private, sacred and profane. It presupposes the notion that signs are only meaningful in their relation to other signs and the intersubjectivity among persons in dialogue. Chapters also variously examine how the interplay of semioethics and dialogue underpins public life and the existential gifts that sustain a healthy polis. This book will be of interest to scholars in semiotics, dialogue research, communication ethics, and philosophy of communication.

Book Description
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In her latest book, Brené Brown writes, “If we want to find the way back to ourselves and one another, we need language and the grounded confidence to both tell our stories and be stewards of the stories that we hear. Over the past two decades, Brown’s extensive research into the experiences that make us who we are has shaped the cultural conversation and helped define what it means to be courageous with our lives. Atlas of the Heart draws on this research, as well as on Brown’s singular skills as a storyteller, to show us how accurately naming an experience doesn’t give the experience more power—it gives us the power of understanding, meaning, and choice. Brown shares, “I want this book to be an atlas for all of us, because I believe that, with an adventurous heart and the right maps, we can travel anywhere and never fear losing ourselves.”

Heaven
Author: Clive Alando Taylor
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1728379466
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 218
Book Description
They say what happens in heaven also happens on earth, and vice-versa, and so on earth as it is in heaven and so forth, for as much as we often like to paraphrase in saying, that such above is also such below, and so below is also such above, as do we often recognise along with real worldly events, that as we try to distinguish whether it is life that imitates art, or indeed, whether it is art that imitates life that as much as we have learnt to mimicry, or to interpret our portrayal of the world as we know it and experience it, then surely we must acknowledge that life is not forever and yet still we believe that it shall become so. As it is only by God's grace that we have forever held this humble belief in our minds even though it may have dampened the amusement of our senses, and yet still it has also allowed us to transcend towards the seeking such knowledge, if only to acquire the wisdom in becoming all knowing. For as much we may search and seek out for a heaven upon the earth still we often look towards the sky, along with the faith and the hope that we may come to discover such a place of awesome reverence and wonder, which has always been attributed with many a name and many a title, some of which I have hastened to mention here i.e. Paradise, Nirvana Valhalla Elysium and Tiandao, amongst with many more, and yet still we believe this heaven to be the spiritual abode and resting place of our heavenly souls. As H.O.M.E – (Heaven Offers Many Examples) and yet still I can only contend to think and to believe that such a heavenly realm, which has always found itself to be such a prominent and worthy place within our hearts, must also endeavour to be one that we are inspired to compose and to write about, and must also be one that we are ready to carve and to paint about, and must also be one that we ready to build and to strive about if only to nurture as we plant and as we grow upon reflection, whilst striving towards this heaven ideal.
